They've been making these things over 20 years, dribbling out a couple every so often. Most of them weren't exactly young to begin with so the mileage is showing.

They were all looking noticably older, Catarella looks ready for his pension.

I got a lump in my throat at that scene with the brothers at the end.

I also thought Salvo was going to get it on with the Swedish actress .

As much as I enjoy these, credibility is beginning to stretch now
Smart phones and he doesn't know how to send and email?
Two guys shoot up a school and only Mimi and him go to arrest the criminals? In any country in Europe in the 21st century that would be done by a full SWAT team
I think the scriptwriters are struggling with what they want it to be.

I enjoyed it, and there was definitely a spark between Salvo and the Swedish film interpreter.

Yes it is a bit anachronistic - phones, computers or whatever made sense when it was the early ones but now it's like a mix of 80s/90s with modern day. Maybe people from Rome really do think Sicily is that backwards? Or they just don't dare to evolve it.

The actual mystery bits in this one were derisory, they're often not enormously strong but don't matter too much in context. These were comically weak. Good hook with the film of the wall but they did nothing with it (I was hoping they were leading to a forgotten accidental shooting by the young son as hints were there), while the 'Nameless' one was obvious inside 20 seconds.

Scenery is still good but these two episodes just felt hollow and not fun like the older ones.

The director died suddenly before these two were shot and Zingaretti directed them, so that may be a factor.

I read that they were planning to kill him off. These two episodes have looked a little 'tired'.

I would like to see them continue the Young Montalbano series. Pound for pound they were of higher quality. But I suppose a lot of those actors have aged a lot as well.

Perhaps a series of 'Middle-Aged Montalbano'?

I enjoyed it. I mean, in fairness, the wife and I were taking the piss out of it how he could be investigating 6 films of a blank wall. But then when you start to see it all come together, I thought it was bloody clever. Although, if we're on about stretching credibility, the bit that got me was how they managed to find the one builder who could identify a wall in the whole of Vigata.

Last night we watched the first episode of Montalbano (they're all on iPlayer) and the new ones are completely different to how they started. I only got in to it, well I don't know where I fell in to it really. It was also a surprise to see Livia's boobs. Well I think it was her boobs, could be Montalbano's head!

Would anyone here care to tell me why, in the first episode (if you can remember) why they refer to Montalbano as Doctor? Or was it just a translation cock up?

Were there three of them? biggrin

Anybody with a university degree is honoured with 'dottore' in Italy. I presume Montalbano is a graduate, though they never seem to make much of this in the programme.

Then in that case that was a very amusing scene where Montalbano was standing on the film set, watching what was presumably Zingaretti's own film crew pretending to make a film within the film he was actually making.

silly

It was hard to tell, my wife kept blocking my view!

It's just odd because himself and Mimi get referred to it a few times, and I'm reliant on the subtitles. But there's bits where I catch the odd "comensario" and there's no mention of "inspector" in the subtitles. So I know I'm missing some of the words, so I thought I might be missing the context to it too.

It appears that Season Two of Young Montalbano starts tonight on BBC4 in the usual 9pm 'subtitle' slot.

It was quite a stretch to imagine he'd changed so much in just ten years, it's going to be a bigger stretch in just five!

It must be a very hard job to cost him all his hair and to shrink him so much.

That's before we get to how he's apparently so great at his job yet his career has obviously come to a crashing halt - along with all the others there - and everyone's been stuck in the same job in the same place for years.

My 88 year old mother in law has justed to watch them!

She struggles a bit with the subtitles but, really enjoys the scenery smile

There's a final new series of Montalbano airing in Italy now, so should be coming over to the UK eventually.

Well Endeavour/Morse managed it for over 30 years or so.
