Good films I watched this weekend (Vol 2)
Discussion
Downfall on BBC4 last night. I know we all know the film, but it still is a tour de force from Bruno Ganz, he gives Hitler the qualities of a scabby old dog & the oppressive atmosphere of the world closing in is realised brilliantly by the cold grey of the bunker set & the ever present noise of the generators implying the relentless march to oblivion. Love that movie.

Agree. Its brilliant.THis week I watched Incendies which I think was recommended on here.
Excellent film about a brother and sister who get a strange request in their mother's will to track down a brother they never knew they had in a war-torn Arabic country. Brilliant story, excellent characters , interesting twists and very original.
8.75/10 for me. Thoroughly recommend it.

Yep, great film but it sucks the life out of you - shocking and depressing!THis week I watched Incendies which I think was recommended on here.

It's an old ish film, but I watched "8 Mile" last night - I'm not a fan of "The rap music" but I found the film to be really well filmed with good acting, good script and engaging characters (apart from mekhi what's his name with some dodgy looking dreadlocks).
Didn't expect to enjoy it but I did.

A walk amongst the tombstones
Liam Neeson plays Liam Neeson in this Taken like film, although the feel is much less wham-bam and far darker and tense, with a 7even type of feel.
So in effect it's nothing like Taken, other than the fact Liam Neeson leads in both...Liam Neeson plays Liam Neeson in this Taken like film, although the feel is much less wham-bam and far darker and tense, with a 7even type of feel.
It ain't about his estranged family
He isn't ex special forces
It's not about his revenge, and he doesn't actually kick much ass in "A Walk..."
He's an ex tough cop with some crippling issues hired to help a gang get revenge... dark and tense is right.
Liam Nesson doing the tough guy routine - check
Ex cop vs ex special forces
Kidnapped daughter vs kidnapped other people
there are some pretty clear parallels, and I point out the differences
It's not exactly Liam Neeson in Love Actually is it!
Watched BASEketball again last night http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0131857
Very silly but my stupid humour, think it's great
7/10

I read an article that said that Liam Neeson turned down the role of James Bond earlier in his career because he didn't want to get typecast into the Action Film role, but acknowledged that this would inevitably happen but he chose to defer it to later in his career. Seems like 'later' has now arrived.

don't get me wrong - he is pretty good at the grizzled retired hardman role that Harriosn Frod used to get, and he has resucitated his career - good on him, seems a lovely bloke too who has got through some personal tragedySeems like 'later' has now arrived.
The Maze Runner.
Good acting, especially from the lead Dylan O'Brian. Well be seeing him again I'm sure.
Lots of British actors too. It's got Will Poulter in it, the stupid guy in We're The Millers - but he's quite serious in this - who's got an interesting face!
Storyline is a little obvious but still good and keeps you interested.
Shame the ending's a bit poo.
6/10.

I thought it was ok.
But then I do have the mental age of an 11yo.

Saw The Equalizer last night.
Denzel picks up where he left off with Man on Fire, Inside Man, Deja Vu, etc etc. Typical Denzel film, lots of bad guys die, Denzel has the agility and speed of a ceetah, despite being a pensioner working at a local DIY store.
Story is OK, no where near as good as Man on Fire, just another film pumped out to make a studio some money. Worth a watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Every fking cliche in the book done with no style and telegraphed. Action film by the numbers.
My god it's poor. Not just poor it's terrible, really terrible. I want my money back.
No honestly it's worth seeing just to see how bad it is. The ending in the day store is the icing on the cake. It's just laugh out loud silly.
Tonight I watched a documentary, The Hornets Nest, where a veteran war journalist brings his son with him as he joins a US Army squad rolling through Afghanistan.
If you ignore the cringey navel gazing substory where the journalist forges bonds with his estranged son, it is a truly shocking documentary, with scenes that make fictional war movies look tame. Right at the start the cameras are rolling when the troops are milling around at the side of the road, and suddenly a few sniper rounds from the other side of the valley miss the guys by inches. I assumed these invisible Taliban snipers ~1 mile away would just disappear into the hills - but it doesn't go well for them...
It was particularly dusty in my lounge during the last half hour.

Maybe worth posting in the other thread then. Every fking cliche in the book done with no style and telegraphed. Action film by the numbers.
