WD would excel if lard left and they had a good replacement.

I also think the shows success is despite him not because of him.
Go on then, who's your suggested 'good replacement'?

My point exactly. TG is still on and has survived without Clarkson et al.....

Username checks out (again).

Whenever he goes to another country to buy a vehicle and has to interact with non-English-speaking sellers it is always hilarious.

It has been on life support ever since. It seems it only stays on through force of habit,

Agreed.

Honestly, you people who don't like Mike... you don't need to imagine what Wheeler Dealers without him would be like.... There's a bunch of other cookie-cutter car-flipping shows that have been riffing on the WD idea for years and guess what... hardly anyone cares about any of those.

Like him or don't - Wheeler Dealers is Mike. In front and behind the camera. Don't like Mike? Watch something else.

What do you suppose you're being condescending about now?

I still think the show has had its day, I did enjoy when Edd was on but then the rebuilds got more and more complex in some cases way beyond what was achievable on a DIY basis plus they started missing things from the total or making up prices to suit, like respraying the Transit for £700.

It's pointless arguing with nostalgia laugh but here goes...

WD has always been a made-up show for TV and always will be. The first few series were no more real than the current ones. I don't remember Mike pricing up his travel costs, or workplace pension and National Insurance contributions even in the apparent 'glory days'. We were all just a bit more naive 20 years ago because it was new and fresh. At least now they shoot it with an HD camera rather than a potato.

It used to be quite refreshing to see fk-ups occasionally too, for example cracking the Messerschmitt roof or doing a bad spray job on the Capri. Now they’re all Hagarty-ready.

But I’m looking forward to the new series, I don’t mind either of the presenters and if I get cross I can either FWD or switch it off…

A lot seem to be fixated on his weight. So what.

In fairness, it was exellent for a season or two (at most). When they genuinely had great fun, and they still talked about cars, but those were the twilight years. It rapidly turned into a farce (for tradesmen to cheer about), but that is for another thread , well established, on here.

Really enjoyed the Dolly Sprint last night, think they did a really good job considering what he bought

As did I, however, did you notice how immaculate under the wheel arches were before they did the bodywork? To me, it looked like a much better car that they'd just taken the doors, bonnet and boot off from and replaced with some of those that littered the dexion shelves in the seller's workshop!

Easy job to put the originals (if this was the case) back on and give it a quick blow over wink

That said, the bonnet gap at nearside front seemed to be consistent before/after spraying - so maybe it was the same item?

Anyway, all supposition and it's 'telly' of course and made for a painless hour of entertainment.

The £1800 for the respray again seemed remarkably cheap.

Nice cars though and I'm sure the Dolly Sprint specialist saw the advantage in inflating their value. I nearly fell off my chair when he paid £6250 for it but the finished car was probably worth the £13750 in today's inflated market.

Never really liked Mexicos but I'm sure the Dolly was a lot more expensive.

It was tedious and a stupid comparison anyway.
RS2000 would have been a fairer comparison

Yes. In 1975, the list price of a Sprint was £2293.

A Mexico was 1755, RS1600 was 2394 and the RS2000 was 1965.

One of the classic mags pitched one against the RS2000 and HP Firenza which I think the Firenza won but that cost £2625 new. A Magnum 2300 saloon was 1823.

So the Mexico was never a rival...
