Isn't the key here "companion"? - which none of the other characters mentioned (or River Doodah) were.
Jack was a companion in the Tardis for Boom Town, Bad Wolf and Parting of the Ways. After joining at the end of The Doctor Dances then returning for later episodes Utopia / The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords, The Stolen Earth / Journey's End and The End of Time.Next series will certainly be interesting.
New Producer, new Doctor, new Companion. Could even class that as a reboot!
I'm genuinely leaning towards wanting a female Doctor next just to freshen up the format. No wimmins lib agenda, just needs a different take on things.
I like Ben Whishaw but he's just more of the same Tennant/Smith style. And as much as I like Richard Ayoade (sp) he doesn't have the serious side to pull off the gravitas of The Doctor's occasional epic speeches.

Lot of people on the thread criticising Peter Capaldi. I agree that he didn't nail the Doctor right away. But his later episodes are fantastic!
The Christmas Special where he's imprisoned and spends the lifetime of the universe slowly, but surely punching his way through a rock wall. Simply brilliant. Then
"It always starts this way. The Doctor is unarmed. But then..."
Capaldi got you to believe that the Doctor was actually dangerous. He nailed that in a way that Ecclestone, Tennant and Smith hadn't quite, although they were all pretty good in their own ways.
With Capaldi you see the "War Doctor" inside. (I'm so glad John Hurt got to play him!).
Not sure about what I have heard of the new series. Doctor Who is at its best when you are not sure the kids should be watching it, so....
Goodness knows who they'll get to replace Capaldi.

John Simm is back as The Master. Much like sometimes there is more than 1 Doctor fighting evil this time there's more than 1 Master perpetrating it.
Is that in the trailer? The ones I've seen have (is it Michelle Gomez?) as the Master(with boobs)From the press release:

I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what The Master gets up to in the next series.

Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you'll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what The Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.

That wasn't the Xmas Special. I would agree that his later episodes are good. And the last 2 probably 3 of his second series were good but between them there was so much padding navel gazing etc The Christmas Special where he's imprisoned and spends the lifetime of the universe slowly, but surely punching his way through a rock wall. It was like history repeating itself with a 30 year gap
Well that first one wasn't all that bad. I think its pretty clear what the story arc will be about.
I thought the trip to see the Daleks was rather pointless and just there for familiarity... did you spot the Movellans btw
Anyway a bit like my wifes roast potatoes much better than it could have been and rather dark in places
