Ouch, the Audience Score for this series on Rotten Tomatoes appears to be falling as fast as the viewing figures, dipping below 50% for the first time:

The score is really a lot worse than it looks, there are hundreds of 1/2 star ratings and RT doesn't count anything under 1 star. What a sad train wreck of a series. My feeling (probably a justification for why it should be more to my liking) is that whilst the current show has novelty, it doesn't have any depth. They've substituted 'monster of the week' for 'lesson of the week'.
Show formats have moved on immensely since the days of Quantum Leap, and the Netflix generation want something they can get their teeth into. Which makes me worry the new show won't have much longevity once the novelty wears off.
On the other hand there is a lot they've got right. I'm loving Jodie (her spot on Children in Need last night was perfect) and the production quality is outstanding.
But without more depth, Jodie is left defining the Doctor just as someone who talks fast and looks confused.

To be fair, Blink is not just the best ever DW episode, but the best episode of anything, anywhere, ever.
(And not just because Sally Sparrow is in it.)
Sorry, got to disagree, it's the 2nd best of the new series ( the best is series 1 - Dalek ). (And not just because Sally Sparrow is in it.)
In my opinion, there are only a handful of stories from new-who which I would rate as classics.

Kids loving it here, as are their friends
Maybe it's not being targeted at middle aged motoring nerds?
I don't think it ever was, but thanks to good writing it had much cross generation appeal. Unfortunately, good writing has been noticeable by its absence over the last few years. Maybe it's not being targeted at middle aged motoring nerds?
If Chibnall and the BBC had intended to drop the adult audience and focus firmly on kids then why move it to Sunday evenings? Sunday evening TV afaik has never been primarily for children's TV.
I do wonder what the ratings current would look like if Dr Who was still in its Saturday slot.
Looking at the consolidated ratings, viewing figures for those watching it later in the week are dropping even faster than the overnight ratings.
Table: Percentage of first week's viewing figures for subsequent episodes, taking episode 1's figures as a baseline of 100%
Episode | Overnight | Consolidated |
---|---|---|
1 | 100 | 100 |
2 | 86.7 | 68.5 |
3 | 77.9 | 71.7 |
4 | 78.4 | 64.9 |
5 | 74.6 | 59.4 |
6 | 70.4 | n/a |
That suggests to me that there's a certain level of "stickiness" in the overnights from people watching TV as it's broadcast because there's nothing better to do, but less and less desire for people to actively seek the episode out on iPlayer later. With the 20-35 age bracket being the group most prone to watching TV at a later date, it's not just the middle aged motoring nerds that are turning off imho.

I did. This one seemed more Doctor Who than the Rosa Parks and India/Pakistan episodes, which were good as history lessons with a bit of aliens stuff tacked on, but the Doctor seemed incidental in those. This one has creepy robots, and referenced previous Who beyond the 'White haired Scotsman' line in the first episode. So that does give some hope that a few known monsters or characters can return in the next series.
Yep, I've given up.
Nothing wrong with Jodie, I think she's OK as the dr and its well made, but the stories are pants.
Also don't like three assistants, there should be a connection (or even heaven forbid some sexual tension) between the dr and his assistant and its not happening with three of them.

This weeks epidose seemed driven by comedy than anything else (Lee Mack perfectly cast for example) but I didn't think the moral was as heavy handed as previously.
You're right though, Easternlight, there are too many companions. Best thing would be for the kid and his grandad to go home, and leave her with the policewoman.
