It’s been common knowledge that Tennant was being written back in since May. ( see posts above)
What was common knowledge was that he was back in this episode in a cameo role...not that he'd be the 14th doctor reborn. He's in the 3 specials that are coming before the handover to the 15th doctor who I have to say looked good albeit briefly in the clip at the end.Role on Russell Davies tenure!
This threads title is very apt even 9 1/2 years later.

I knew he would be back in some way for a special episode, I wasn't expecting to see him back in a regeneration. The clues were in his last words as the 10th Doctor.
The first and last words of all the Doctors usually take on some sort of significance in the reboot..
Was it a good episode? ... for most of Chibnals tenure as show runner I have just felt sorry for Jodie - she is a fine actor but has just been given some awful scripts.
I have come to the conclusion that last night episode wasn't a good episode - but perhaps that it felt like a good episode in places but mainly because the other Jodie stories have been rubbish.
... but maybe I got caught in the return of Sophie Aldred and Janet Fielding as Ace and Tegan and was just enjoying that.
... though blow me William Russel as Ian Chesterton ... the guy is 97 years old ... so respect for that.

I feel the same way. I thought that a lot of the episode was carried by a good dollop of nostalgia with the older doctors and the assistants/ iconic baddies. Take them away and I don't think the story offered a lot.I have come to the conclusion that last night episode wasn't a good episode - but perhaps that it felt like a good episode in places but mainly because the other Jodie stories have been rubbish.

I know she's probably the Timothy Dalton of companions but I always liked Martha Jones, she wasn't just a submissive rollover like a lot of them have been - Jenna Coleman's first appearance as as the girl inside the dalek was awesome and I thought she would make a great companion but for every episode after that they kind of neutered and de-brained her.
And there was Rita from the nightmare hotel episode who I thought they were teeing up to be a new companion as she was smart and capable could easily hold her own against the Doctor's character, but no, they killed her off. :-/
But yeah Jodie got stiffed, such terrible scripts.

We stopped watching it during Capaldi. I gave it longer than my wife and I even gave a few episodes of Jodie a try, but...urgh, it was poor. Very poor.
New bloke looks like (from what I can see/read, etc) that he brings an energy with him and we will watch his first cpl of episodes, see how he does, etc.
Given that the Doctor has always "woke" in their grander schemes and ideas about the Universe, then I see no reason for anyone to whinge about it in the show...IF the writing is good enough. Thats the key, the writing has to be deft, stylish and simply *good*!
Make it good, people will watch. Simples.

Oh no not Rose please!
Wouldn't mind seeing Ashildr again, or the girl in the puddle.
But most of all, the utterly perfect Sally sparrow.
Sally Sparrow actress I have a vague recollection turned down assistant role, you may appreciate her in Collateral (~2018) as lead cop, also had Billie Piper in though (playing a posh drug addict/ PTSD person quite well I thought).Wouldn't mind seeing Ashildr again, or the girl in the puddle.

I guess Rose has done a few reappearances and I think Billie turned it down.
Girl in the puddle/ pilot would be difficult to pull in without Potts character, plus Capaldi said no
Oswin is off with One in a tardis, again difficult to just drop that in, and no Capaldi// Smith either to pull that together
I thought the combo of old docs with old assistances worked okay without labouring through every single one.
Donna will be back from the previous gossip and stills from the Tennant filming that have been released. Oh well another year before the specials, time to watch the end of fam again...so how did the Master avoid the death particle...

I weonder if this "new" David Tennant Doctor is actually some thing to do with the arm growth Doctor that stayed with Rose in the Parallel Universe ?
Good call.Although we did see him appear directly from the regeneration so I lean more towards an anomaly with (said) regeneration possibly to do with the previously 'forced' regeneration Jodie went through.
