I watched 'Godless' over the weekend. A 7 part Western about an on-the-run Outlaw hiding out in a small mining town populated almost entirely by women (the menfolk having perished in a mining accident).

Having double crossed/stolen from his ex-gangmates, they work tirelessly to track him down, The head honcho of the gang (played brilliantly by Jeff Daniels) promises to slaughter any man, woman or child who harbours him. There is a sense of anticipation throughout of an eventual showdown, in true Western style.

The whole thing was brilliant from start to finish. It really captured the atmosphere and all performances were excellent. I'd easily give it an 8/10

Peaky Blinders.

Late to the party and been done to death on here, but just another +1 on how good this is. Season 3 really is up there with the very best from the US.

I still can't quite get my head around Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby - too skinny/small to play the character - not remotely scary. Ironically I spent the first season thinking how much better it would be with Tom Hardy playing the character. A point proven in series 2 when TH actually appeared and presented more menace in his first 10 seconds on screen that Cillian Murphy had in the previous series.

Paddy Considine (S3) is also up there with Darth Vader for baddies. A truly nasty piece of work.

S4 not on netflix but about to start it on Prime. I just hope that Finn Cole/Michael Gray lives up to the glimpses that I've seen of him so far.

LA92 - Excellent documentary on the Rodney King trial and the riots that followed - Some of the footage was absolutely brutal, particularly at the crossroads where the riot started.

Gosh. Awesome. I usually drift off in stuff like this, but I loved it. Our settee was abuzz with sophisticated theories (rash guesses) about what's what, who's who, and when's when.

Brilliant. Strongly recommended. A much more serious Stranger Things. And just about as good.
Just finished watching Season 1 5 minutes ago. There will be comparisons with Stranger Things, however 'Dark' is very different. A missing child is intertwined with four families across 3 generations in a small German town. The past influences the future, and the future influences the past.

IMO the best series I have watched. Period. Although Rick's monologue about Szechuan sauce ('Rick and Morty') might just top it.

Dare I say you’re missing the point and impact of Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders. His character is built around a war damaged, isolated loner who suddenly finds his ‘cause’ as a leader within the family.

I think he works because he looks the opposite of what his character sometimes requires of him. Kind of like Moriarty in the recent Sherlock.

Ooh, I disagree with this. Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby makes Peaky Blinders. It all revolves around him. Tom Hardy's scenery chewing mumbling is not in the same league.

Tommy Shelby to me is the one who's scary - look at the utterly dead eyes. Someone who will coldly and calmly do terrible things because it suits their plan. Much worse than your regular headcase as played by Tom Hardy.

All good entertainment either way.

You're right, comparisons with Stranger Things aren't worth much.

They're both superb series, but very different.

Greta Doppler for me, please. 1953 version.

Paul Ferris, Arran Coghlan and Micky McAvoy don't look particularly intimidating either but I'm not sure you'd want to cross them!

Looks like I should have posted that in the unpopular opinions thread laugh

Don't get me wrong. I get the whole scarred veteran thing and that he shouldn't be Begbie esq one dimensional psycho (to use a wee man example).

It's just that I think the actor lacks the depth and gravitas for the role. Unfortunately for him, he has to share screen time with Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Paddy Considine and Tom Hardy, all of whom act him off the stage.

(Very NSFW spoiler from s03e06 as a case in point) https://youtu.be/dEmydKXlSWU?t=1051

But it is a fantastic series and thoroughly enjoying it.

Just finished the original BBC House of Cards. I thought I'd see it before watching the US series.

Glad I did. A great story.

I will start on the USA show soon.

The Netflix show is excellent, but be aware it doesn't finish properly. In case that affects your decision to start it.
