Just finished The Haunting of Hill House. Very good. Some themes were familiar from The Shining and one of the seasons of American Horror Story, amongst other things, but given that it’s based on a 1959 novel, that’s probably forgivable!
Not slating it as I did enjoy binging it over two days when it was raining. But. It’s nothing a film couldn’t have covered and I’d worked out from the beginning re Bent neck woman etc. Still worth watching for anyone who hasn’t seen it as a good drama series. Steamer said:
Very much so.
When I first looked at it and saw it was over 2hrs I had second thoughts - but it actually flew by.. the first 20mins is tough viewing - obviously.
..I was somewhat surprised he was taken alive in the first place.., and how nobody gave him a good kicking during his arrest is also surprising (and probably why I'm not in the forces!).
Netflix make some excellent viewing.
I agree. I found myself welling up at times and absolutely furious at others. When I first looked at it and saw it was over 2hrs I had second thoughts - but it actually flew by.. the first 20mins is tough viewing - obviously.

The guy who portrayed him played a superb part.

As I understood it Paul Greengrass took the film to Netflix as he knew it was a film that would only play in arthouse/independent cinemas, but he wanted it seen by as big a young audience as possible, and Netflix was the obvious place to go. Netflix did actually put it in theatres too, but only a few.Netflix make some excellent viewing.
I haven't seen anyone mention 'The Haunting of Hill House' yet. I have it a watch after seeing outstanding reviews elsewhere.
I would honestly say it's one of the best things I've seen on Netflix. I'm only through 6 episodes. Basically follows a family of 7 traumatised by a period spent in a large house when they were children, told in parallel with them trying to lead normal adult lives.
I like decent horror flims, and this is as good as any I've seen. Very, very creepy. Fantastic production & acting too. 10/10

This was discussed the other day at work after a few of us watched the trailer (which looked very promising)
Up to episode 6, absolutely fantastic series so far. It takes a few episodes to really get going as there are several timelines which does slow the pace down slightly, but the way this has been directed is just brilliant. A blend of horror, thriller & drama that unravels at a rate that is gripping and consistent.
So far from what i have seen it deserves the 9/10 IMDB rating

I gave White Gold a watch yesterday and ended up watching the first two episodes back to back. Its a comedy cent red around a double glazing sales team in the early 80's. Its hilarious.
I came to this thread with the intention of saying White Gold!!! What a great series indeed!! I binge watched them all in one night and have found them to be pure comedy gold!

I must be the only one on this thread to give up on Hill House. Couldn't get into it at all but horror isn't really my thing, I find it too difficult to suspend disbelief I think.
We started the French series, The Forest last night - teens going missing in a small French town, new chief comes in to take over a lethargic local police force, echos of disappearances in the past, has 'it' started again? - all pretty formulaic but well done so far.

Nope, watched first ep as my missus likes scary/horror stuff (I don't but she watches enough things I like so give and take) and she was the one who said we won't watch that again if I didn't mind. Mark Benson said:

I was a bit disappointed with The Haunting of Hill House. It was okay, I didn't hate it, but all the time-shifting didn't make it easy to follow. We started the French series, The Forest last night - teens going missing in a small French town, new chief comes in to take over a lethargic local police force, echos of disappearances in the past, has 'it' started again? - all pretty formulaic but well done so far.
I watched The Forest a few weeks ago and quite enjoyed it.
