After Life. Sentimental claptrap. Laughed and sobbed like a baby in equal measures. Utterly brilliant telly.
Great review!Edit - just watched the whole lot.
It’s had me the closest I’ve been to tears for years with the bit where his dad recognised him, then an immediate laugh just at the ‘saddest’ part. That’s how you do dark comedy.
The only odd bit was his lack of feeling guilty over killing the drug dealer/user guy he worked with.

And agree on the latter point, seemed inconclusive what his motivation was.
But on the whole, it was very well done and basically his manifesto, dont be a , be nice and be a bit sarcastic.
Could have benefitted from a few more episodes and a bit more character development.
I have to say I am surprised at the positive reviews of After Life. I am 4 episodes in and find it quite disappointing.
To me it is just another rehash of material that has been around since the Xfm days (fat people, table manners, atheism) delivered by a string of one dimensional characters
It even fails basic credibility - or is it explained later how a vicar and local newspaper reporter can live in such a house? The office they work in looks rather grand for a failing local rag that uses a heroin addict to deliver the paper. And why is a professional newspaper photographer wandering round with a point and shoot camera?
The Office - and to a lesser extent Extras - were beautifully observed with some wonderful characters (Finchy, Keith). This seems second rate in comparison...

at last — someone thinks the same as me...
me also 4 eps in and quite frankly am stopping now....
tbh some good funny moments - but excellent script - nope
unless i fell asleep where has the heart ripping moments been?
his wife died — his emotions / grief to the world etc is nothing new ...

Valley Uprising
Alternative 'documentary' on the history of climbing in Yosemite. Focuses as much on the myth and legend of the counter culture as it does the actual climbing feats themselves.
Provides a really nice context for the more specialist documentaries about specific feats and serves to reinforce their impressiveness.
Really well produced and goes to prove that your granddad really was cooler than you.
A strong 8/10 if you're into this kind of thing.

We just watched all of Afterlife tonight. We thought it was brilliant. I think RG still finds it hard to 100% remove David Brent from his character performances but the whole series was great.
I think him paying for the guys drugs was him wanting to help someone who wanted “out”, because he couldn’t do it himself.

I also really enjoyed it though and will likely watch it again.

I can suspend disbelief if the programme is well written and acted (Sex Education for example) but this wasn't and we found this completely disappointing.
Same old material, same old characters and Gervais is still Gervais, just without the sly look to camera.
Managed 3 episodes to see if it improved but just didn't get on with it at all.

I've never seen the office or anything with Gervais in as such, so perhaps without comparison, that's why, but we thought it was excellent.
The bits about basic credibility "how can he afford a house like that etc" ...just easier not to judge...I know someone who pushed trolleys at the supermarket and lived in a big house with his missus being a teaching assistant. With no kids....money is easy and they did inherit a fair sum as her parents both passed away relatively young.

I take your point but I can't really enjoy fiction if it doesn't have the "ring of truth". Would you give your house keys to a prostitute who's friend had robbed you just to save face with a work colleague you barely know? - I nearly stopped watching at this point.
At least in Extras they gave the main character a back story to explain how/why a middle aged bloke was working as a film extra.
Some of it was well done though - in particular when he takes heroin for the first time
You are in for a treat if you haven't seen the Office. Everything is bang on accurate and believable right down to the clothes and dialogue ("ties from Nobby - two for a tenner, yes please, four"!). Keith's appraisal has to be one of the funniest 2-3 minutes of British sitcom ever (don't You Tube it, best to see it in context in the series)
I am not sure if this is due to the absence of Stephen Merchant. I don't think he had anything to do with the Life on the Road film either and it shows...

I watched the first 10 mins a lunchtime today to get a taste for it. Fair warning the first 3-4 mins are a total cringefest where they turn the american fk yeah machismo up to 12.
It's only a slight spoiler
A 'badass' tactical AF, Sealalike stands before a class of less badass normal Army types and tells them how a year ago he was choking someone to death in a supermarket because he hadn't moved his 'Cart' when he asked him to. He talks about how he's so badass he can turn off every emotion to achieve his mission, but inflicting "extreme" violence upon his fellow man has made physiological and psychological changes to him. I expected this to become a cautionary tale of PTSD, but no, he remains stony faced and tell them "that's the price you pay, to be a Warrior" and then Metallica starts to play
It does improve to standard Tactical AF Porn shortly afterwards.
It should be fun.

See, to me, that was one of the bits I found to be pretty likely. He'd given up on everything, didn't care about anymore (like the alleyway bit), but he was still British enough to cover up how he knew her and wouldn't back down from the situation. It also set it up for his whole attitude to change because she turned out to be completely different to what he expected.

First half is good in a 'Tactical AF Porn' kind of way though. Good to see or rather hear Pedro Pascal again - as soon as you hear his voice you know who it is. Sadly he also appears to share Affleck's penchant for pies...
7.7 on imdb, I'd go with a slightly below par 6.8 if you can stomach the cheese.
