Narcos is pretty good, I don't agree with adulatory 9.1/10 on IMDb but it's enjoyable enough
If I may try my hand at a bit of psychology with no formal training... I think any show with subtitles makes you have to concentrate to watch it and draws you much further into the show than it normally would, especially nowadays with the binge watching culture. Therefore people pay more attention and thus "enjoy" it more than they would a show that didn't have subtitles, hence Narcos getting such a high IMDb (obviously it's a good show, so not the only reason). I realised this when watching a French show called Spiral, it really is good but I enjoyed it more because I paid attention throughout. My fiancé sometimes has to rewatch entire episodes of stuff because she isn't paying attention to it and is on Instagram/Facebook whatever, and then she loses interest. I'm sure someone will be along to tell me that I'm talking rubbish, but that's my theory.

I agree with the losing interest thing. When I watch something, if it's something I want to watch then it always has my undivided attention. Whereas nearly all of my friends, no matter how good the film or TV programme is, will be on their phones or tablets. It then infuriates me, when 5 minutes later they're asking me what is happening because they missed a crucial part of the plot!I'm sure someone will be along to tell me that I'm talking rubbish, but that's my theory.

That's exactly what I thought.
I'm fairly certain none were actors and some of them were acting from direct personal experience too, iirc.

I cant really decide what I thought. I enjoyed the film but despite other reviews I didn't particularly like Idris Elba in it. Not necessarily because he was a celeb, I just didn't think he was particularly good as an actor and lacked the combination of charisma and psycho the role required.
Not sure. I felt I should have liked it much more than I actually did. 6.5/10 perhaps

Beasts of No Nation
Simple yet powerful, gripping and hard hitting film about a child soldier in Africa. Different to most other war films and possible film of the year
Watched this last night and was certainly a great film. was engrossed in it from start to finish. Fingers crossed it wins a few awards at the upcoming awards ceremonies.Simple yet powerful, gripping and hard hitting film about a child soldier in Africa. Anthony Jeselnik - Thoughts and Prayers.
Exactly my kind of stand-up comedy, dark and offensive.
Added to list, how far down the dark offensive road is it compared to, lets say, Jim Jefferies or Brendon Burns? Exactly my kind of stand-up comedy, dark and offensive.

Just finished Narcos, thought it was superb! Well worth a watch, rather looking forward to the second series.
On a very different note, they've now got the 2012-onward series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Netflix. I grew up with the original animated version and was a bit disappointed by the subsequent live action version, and by the early-2000s remake. Actually, make that crushingly disappointed...
This latest one, however, is bloody excellent! They've done a proper job with it - enough similarity to the original series but with different takes on storylines and characters to make it interesting. Loads of cheesy jokes interspersed amongst the action scenes, just like the original. Quality animation and voice acting as well. Shame my daughter is too young for it, have to wait 'till she's in bed before I can get my Turtles fix

I've been watching some good stuff from down under. An Australian comedy series called Dreamland, and a New Zealand film comedy "What we do in the shadows" and can highly recommend both of them.
Watched 'What we do in the Shadows' last night.Wasn't expecting vampires (although the title kind of gives it away) but enjoyed the film, reminded me of 'Being Human' but with more laughs.
Also watched 'Weekender' the other day, it doesn't get too many stars but if you were around the rave scene in the late '80s or early '90s it's very reminiscent. A group of kids in Manchester decide to hold their own parties, inevitably they attract the attention of the local criminal etc. etc. Pretty formulaic but well done.

I'm ambivalent on Idris Elba, sometimes very good, equally as often just seems to play himself.
