Still, one bad comment is still much less than nearly everybody else.

Interesting that he uses Richard James. I hear a lot of Tory politicians do - Cameron and Osbourne for sure.

I'm a little disappointed that he doesn't use John Phillips, London.

Come on Yipper - lighten up! I reckon Mr Portillo and Ms Butchart (BBC Four) with their colourful wardrobes brighten up modern programming:

Possibly cheating on the last one...

Anyway...

Taunton to Newton Abbot tonight

It's really quite hard to reconcile some of his Conservative Party conference speeches with the person we see today who seems genuinely interested in everyone he meets (a skill I suspect you can't learn) and willing to have a go at anything.

The thing about Portillo as a politician is that he gave the hard-right Thatcher-esque impression in speeches and particularity with the Party but was actually very much on the Liberal wing on the Conservatives in what he did and the policies he later espoused. I can only assume he decided he needed to give a particular impression to advance in Government at the time.

He was apparently very popular as Defence Secretary with the Armed Services and of course is credited as being a prime mover in saving the Settle to Carlisle Railway when Transport Minister when the economic argument was overwhelmingly to close it.

I've seen him give a couple of talks in person on Politics and he is still an excellent speaker who argues his thoughts very well - regardless of whether you agree with them or not.

Makes a lot of a sense, he comes over a hell of a lot more intelligent than the current crop of misfits, although you suspect he'd sound similar had he stayed on the politico track...

I think the true success of Michael Portillo is that when any other railway journey show on TV now, in our house at least, it is instantly judged against his programmes. Usually around how much better it would be if Portillo was presenting the show.

I fully agree that politics loss is very much the TV viewers gain.

Just caught up the Royal Mint episode, £3.5 millions for 10 gold bars! I will never view Lethal Weapon and Die Hard the same way again!

Same here. There was some actress presenting a show about a railway in Scotland - absolutely no rapport with the people she met. Portiiiilllllyo is the Gold Standard.

Agreed. I don't particularly like trains, but I will happily sit and watch this. His jackets just add to his eccentricity I think. I particularly liked the recent episode in Ireland where his trousers, jacket and shirt made the tricolour colours.

I noticed the other night when he was in Ireland that his jacket / shirt / pants combo was the Irish flag. I do love his programme, and the outfits.

He often wears colour combinations that match the national flag. He was wearing a yellow jacket with blue trousers in the Ukraine episode.

Exactly! Liked the blue/yellow.

...and up to the point he’s met the female body-builders

But he’s just moved on to wearing the national costume/Cossacks complete with headgear!!

PS - Lviv. And you couldn’t lose him in a crowd could you??!!

Just finished the latest American series, again very enjoyable.

I don’t watch many shows about holidays, but this show, and Rick Stein’s show are inspirational; I visited a few places where they were previously featured on the programmes, places I wouldn’t have visited otherwise.

I saw several of his American trip episodes, and found them quite charming and kept my interest.
