So apparently the monster he is fighting is called... MUTO! A quick google of godzilla 2014 shows the leaked toy pictures of the monster. Some of the literature seems to indicate it was engineered by humans

Last year there was a teaser at comicon for Godzilla. Now these teasers sometimes don't match the final movie but even so there was a pretty big 'reveal' in it.

They never released this teaser officially but I'm wondering if they are holding something back in the trailers, this is a (maybe spoilery) image from that original introduction trailer....
