as mentioned he comes across as a blagger and trying to be a geezer, not the style of presenting that I personally like and without much depth. All fur coat and no knickers is the perfect summary - but then it probably suits most people under 25 these days.
No, he wasn't exactly James May (when he's on good form).

As above, though, I did enjoy the second episode, but mainly for Ari Vatanen -not for anecdotes about being an eastender driving a mini to school.

ps. I recently went to a Radio 4 recording with James Burke (BBC Tomorrow's World, Apollo Moon landings) as one of the guests. Here is one of his clips from the 1970s. Watch it to the end. He's an interesting bloke and not a geezer.

His quote about enjoying some Guinness and a couple of the local young ladies made me laugh. I couldn't imagine that being the answer nowadays, after the various thanks to generous sponsors.

Ari made that episode, comes across as a thoroughly decent chap.

Note how he had a go at Trials. That must have been around SSDT time as "Dibs" wouldn't be up there for anything else. I will have to find out what "Dibs" made of Mr. Elba.

Would have been awesome spectating that little blast around town.

That sound cloud9
+1. That must have been superb watching and hearing that.
Only managed to watch ep1 so far but yes would have been a real moment.

That sort of thing always impresses me about America or at least some not up their own jacksie areas. Getting permission to do stuff like that.

Seen similar things before where a TV company get permission to do something without all the HSE and spectator control stuff so beloved of nanny.

Can you imagine Brake? Would have a complete fanny fit.

As a reasonable comparison, the UK equivalent: Jenson Button drives F1 car through Frome.

Yes, and a glimpse of Climb Dance on TV.

Brake were silent on the BRM day in Bourne and didn't feature much when the Tuscan racers drove from Darlington town centre to Croft ; nor the Jim Clark Rally nor the Tour of Mull . Things aren't really half as bad as sometimes people want to make them sound.HSE don't get directly involved in sanctioning events(but only an idiot wouldn't do some commonsense stuff re spectator control - or is that nanny state too ?)

Still, he rolled shortly after so at least i got a laugh out of it!

Well it's all relative. Horses for courses. Only have to see what spectators get up to on stage rallies to know that some forms of control are wise. But that's when vehicles (plural) are being driven competitively at the limit possibly of the vehicle and certainly that of the drivers.
Competition car parades are another thing and whilst no knowledge of what specifically happened in the cases you mentioned would be surprised if spirited drifting and speeds OPL were allowed and no possible censure.

Sadly I cannot imagine anywhere in UK where someone would be allowed and permitted to drive a full not road legal competition car around a town on roads open to other traffic, pedestrians and shoppers wandering about without what appeared to be any segregation or control and then give it some welly. OK the degree of welly was very restrained compared to the driver/vehicle capabilities but where in UK would that be allowed to happen?

The example of JB and Frome was the nearest but different level of crowds.

To me the Veyron segment was a waste of time, the voice over early in part two was cringe worthy and the claim to be 'King of Speed' was laughable, he's not even a pretender to the throne.

Yep, thanks. I watched it once.
He also played Stringer Bell in acclaimed US TV series "The Wire".

And he played Nelson Mandela in the recent biopic, for which there's a bit of an Oscar buzz.
If you've watched American Gangster, he gets shot in the head by Denzel Washington.
Nope, not seen these either as I dont watch much telly, it`s usually crap hence not knowing who the bloke was. And the last thing I`d be watching would be about Mandela.
But if you saw Luther, even just the once, you'll have seen him.

Just cos I saw a bit of it once doesn`t mean I know who he is.

Just someone else off the telly.

I enjoyed it. He didn't take himself too seriously, was genuinely passionate about cars and doing well.

Shamw he didn't talk about his own cars though, especially with all his mention of boy racing in his youf

Came across as a the type of person who thinks they're into cars, but haven't got the slightest clue. An Audi S-line type of person, "yeah it's the sports model so it's faster".

Some of the footage was nice but let down by the presenting, some of it was really cringe worthy.
