Lock stock and two smoking barrels, the Departed and Quantum of solace complicated?
What are you boys smoking?
Your mum. What are you boys smoking?
OK, QoS isn't so much complicated as confusing; I understood it better on the second viewing. However I then watched it a third tine and got confused again.

Donnie Darko was complicating but was also pants IMHO so it got to a point where I didn't care.
Departed and Unusual Suspects are two films which are more complicated the second time round IMHO as I find myself knowing the outcome (duh seen it once) but trying to figure out if I missed some minute detail first time round. I'm basically just rewatching for the clues.
Just didn't get Donnie Darko at all. Downright weird. Usual Suspects is one of my favourite films, especially the first time I watched it, but as you say I think you can over think it if watching it again.
I enjoyed the departed, especially all the twists at the end, I didn't find it too complicated. At least there were no giant rabbits in it to confuse things further.
Seem to remember Vanilla Sky being unfathomable or was it minority report? Some overly clever thing with Tom Cruise in it anyway. I sort of lost the will to live during it.

You watched that 3 times? Oh sod that - I watched it once, got the suspicion that there might be some greatness buried in there somewhere, but there's not it's just a terrible plot, same goes for the Matrix sequals...
Pulp Fiction is complicated to watch, but only because of the non-linier ...

One for us old codgers: The Ipcress File (early Michael Caine Cold War spy thriller).
Saw the film and read the book several times each, and still don't get it.
I read the book recently for the first time and it differs considerably from the film. The film's a breeze by comparison!Saw the film and read the book several times each, and still don't get it.
"Good spot of lunch at your club?"
"Not bad...the dover sole's rather good"
Some great films listed on here incidentally.
Inception was the 'mainstream' film that came to mind. It does require some concentration.
Primer I have only watched once and I found it a complete headfk. It's hardly mainstream, though. There is a plot flowchart available that aids full understanding through multiple viewings!

Farewell My Lovely (1944) Dick Powell aka "Murder, My Sweet" (original title)
Properly hard to follow first time.
The old B&W film noir can be labyrinthine. Modern versions are pretty good. LA Confidential is good try, as is Usual Suspects.Properly hard to follow first time.

If you're expressing difficulty in following a movie by writing linier & sequal, you need to lower your sights a little.

I've watched 'The Prestige' a few times now and I'm not sure if it's just plain complicated or you make your own mind up about it all. Either way, great film.
But everything is explained to you at the end?Halb said:
That was Vanilla Sky for me. I thought it went a bit up its own bottom.
Vanilla Sky is possibly one of the most insulting films I've watched.I worked it out as it went along and didn't appreciate the director assuming I was stupid and spelling it out in primary colours at the end.
And, agreed, it did go up it's own arse.
