I'm beginning to feel the way I did about Lost. They need to get moving with it now.

I loved the way they reintroduced Gus very slowly and out of focus in the background.
+1 The yellow shirt visible for at least 45 seconds.

I think the first episode was great. People saying it was slow are right but that's fine with me. I enjoy the way the story is told and love the cinematography: the long shots of the railway yard where Mike met the vet were really atmospheric.
yes

The people who say this show needs to hurry up don't get it. Having proven their ability to complete a long story arc multiple times in Breaking Bad, the people behind this show have no questions to answer for me. They know what they are doing and it is a masterclass in television making.

In the latest episode (Directed by Vince himself) this scene was amazing, Quick google reveals it was created as a composite of a blurred shot and a focused shot.

And this is my problem.

I think I'm just a bit too thick to really appreciate it - I like it, but I don't really know why.

Yes that shot looked great, but it lingered for ages, and then a bit longer - it's becoming like a music video - great visuals, but struggles for a narrative - and I spend the hour looking for cool references - for example there's a whole scene devoted to Chuck talking to the PI about cards, "a buck or two a pack" and how they've got a hole drilled in them to stop people cheating - wtaf is all that about, what nugget of brilliance passed me by this time, because if it's just two people talking about s/h decks of cards, I’d be bored - it's the idea there's some significance to it.

And the names of the colours on the wall - and the weird chart / mountain thing he’s painting.

The moment I see a Polar Bear I'm out.

That one looked really odd, couldn't quite work it out either. With the lighting I thought it might be some weird model!

Overall, an enjoyable episode. I loved the tension as Jimmy went into Los Pollos Hermanos. Initially the guy serving appeared to be out of focus (might have just been my TV) and his build and posture was very Gus (except not in the yellow shirt) making me think at first that was him. Then when he appeared it was a very 'gus' moment.

Was that Crazy8 in the SUV?

Fellow thicko here! Reddit is the goto place to find out stuff when you have time free, those guys poured over every detail in Breaking Bad and are doing the same for this: https://www.reddit.com/r/betterCallSaul

At the time I had no idea what that scene was, or who the guy was. When they turned lights off I wondered if Chuck was gay and had hired him hehe

But later transpired they were just killing time and all the checks Chuck was making from windows were for his trap setup via Ernesto, and playing cards is something you imagine these undercover types may do to stay awake. The hole in the card seems to true, casinos sell off used cards.

It's art. Not everything has to be relevant. Quentin Tarantino does a lot of this in his movies and arguably some of the most famous scenes from those movies are just idle chat. Most of the dialogue in Pulp Fiction is totally irrelevant; conversations about cheeseburgers, foot massages and TV pilots, but that's what gives the characters depth and makes them memorable.

You then have the flip side of that where the characters say nothing at all. How many lines does Mike get per episode? Four or five? His character isn't lacking depth and I think I could happily watch him doing nothing for hours, in a not at all creepy way smile

The sound of a Zippo, the drawing up of a hypodermic syringe, jackbooted footsteps on a wooden floor, superb cinematography IMO smile

So, some discussion on the plot of episode 2...

When Jimmy went into Los Pollos he was being pretty obvious. Looked to me that Gus and the guy with the satchel had some sort of hidden alert and Gus was able to let him know that they were being watched. Satchel guy then drives away and Mike is rumbled as Gus watches Jimmy going to his car.

Looks like Jimmy will be done for 'forced entry to a property' or similar. Do we think they'll take it to the police or just force Jimmy to give up practising law... or something else?

It is Victor. Gus's henchman from BB.

Gus kills him with a boxcutter in BB.
