Yes who would have guessed that a Jaguar would have issues with electrics huh?
I had my head in my hands with this build, the guys have a very public advert for their business and I know Harry is quite open about how much these things cost.
But I would have been pulling bits off my own car to make it run. I would have spent the £500 myself to fit the bits that would make it run for the camera and not have Harry 6 months from now making a video stuck at the side of the road.
It has been in paint prison 6 months longer than planned so the idea that this is a SEMA build and the car is still weeks and weeks away because they are now so busy because of Harry doing a video of their restoration so don't have the time to shake down the car.

Agreed it doesn't put some of these guys in the best light but what I like about these videos is that they seem to portray the people in a fairly honest light. Others would have edited out the the engine guy looking clueless. We've all had those moments and I don't think it's easy trying to work out an issues with a camera lens pointing at you.

Well done to everyone for getting it to this stage.

Looking forward to seeing it back in "the garage".

Ending was simply awesome, the fact it didn't go perfectly first time I think underlines how tricky these things can be, especially if you're trying to re-use an old part. Editing and making everything look perfect first time just wouldn't do justice to the skill set.

Oh what a sweet ending to the latest video! smile

The colour is growing on me too, Harry has such a great collection of cars.

Also thoroughly enjoyed the Project 8 series.

I don’t understand what you mean about the car being a SEMA build? Harry has said that he’s in no rush to get the car back, but Painting Classic Cars probably would of finished the restoration by now if they hadn’t been held up by waiting for the wiring loom.

As for pulling bits of your own car to get the engine running is fine if you have the same engine but neither Tom or Keith did, so quite how they were supposed to get the engine running without having a new distributor to hand I don’t know. These things happen in real life and it’s no big deal as they were able to get the engine running a day later.

File in ignore.

Harry is a maturely minded chap, and these aren't uber-produced vids. Filming an attempted start before a whole bunch of necessary work is done is known to be a 'flyer'.

A 50 year old combined distributor and fuel injection signaller is always, irrespective of car manufacturer, going to be an utter nightmare - I will say I'm surprised Harry didn't go for the replacement off the bat?

Now it's done, as mentioned, plug'n' play - what a sweet, sweet engine. No doubt with much better economy/power and lower emissions thanks to a much quicker and cleaner burn.

A SEMA build takes years, especially if going for the Ridler. It also costs an order of magnitude more - the cost for prepping and painting a single panel on a Ridler build will be higher than the total cost of this car plus it's restoration. I know of people that have spent a few million going for it, to not even be shortlisted...

Is 'Going for a Ridler' some kind of euphemism?

Immense motorshow in the States each year.

Massive focus on customisation, to the point manufacturers spend millions on gifting new models to garages for complete 'builds'.

Also, the home of the Ridler Award, which is the most prestigious 'custom car' prize on the planet.

Me too.

Tom would have much preferred to have the XJC back at his workshop for this initial start, as then he would have had spares to hand should something not work but I wanted it to be filmed at Keith's workshop, where the car is being put back together, as this video was also about how the rest of the work was going and not just about the engine startup.

It was unfortunate the previously faultless distributor (during the 6 years I've owned the car) decided this was the moment it would no longer function but when I received the clips of the engine firing up (once the new distributor had been fitted), it more than made up for it. That V12 sound seemed even angrier than I remember and I can't wait to get it back in the garage in a few weeks time.

Tom correctly diagnosed what the problem was and it was effectively plug and play once the new distributor was fitted. Now it's just a matter of getting the interior put back together, the front end reassembled and then it’s delivery time..

Marvellous! When I was a young man I was sent to do some work for a lovely gentleman who was selling his business on retirement. He and his wife took my colleague and me out to dinner in his V12 XJC. A very special memory of a very special car.

Ah right, no wonder I've never heard of it.
p.s. If you are American you've probably not heard the rhyming slang; 'Going for a Jimmy Riddle' which explains TheGreenHell's comment hehe

I'm not American, in fact by birth I'm officially a Cockney, so the rhyming slang is very well understood!

I live up to the shortened version though, and only spent three days of my life living in the East End.

I just thought it was realistic.
Anyone who messes with cars knows that things don’t always go smooth
It’s all part of the fun. As said,a polished perfect portrayal wouldn’t seem right.
Same goes with the road trip vids too

It's a weird motorshow in that it is trade only so not really like the Earl's court / NEC experience a lot more focus on selling workshop equipment and suchlike. I managed to go one year by being in Vegas at the right time and getting some passes off a bloke in a car park. I had to pretend to be a windscreen salesman called Scott.
