It's all being checked out at the moment and it turns out there was a vacuum pipe off, which would have caused it to over-fuel but I don't expect it'll ever be close to decent mpg. But then even improving to 17-18mpg would be a 40% improvement on where it was on this trip!
I was watching it thinking “this is going to be the “normal” Countach gearbox noise again” - hope it’s just the vacuum pipe! I used to have a Saab 9-5 Aero which frequently did weird things that turned out to be something adrift in the rat’s nest of vacuum pipes. Replaced most of them in the end.

Harris! biggrin

Do you know the story about this?
Harry went to get some lunch for his journo’s, Harris sneaked this drift in whilst Harry was gone.
If that's true, then that's pretty disrespectful. Doesn't do much to improve my opinion of CH to be honest. Yes he can drive and journo at the same time, but he comes across as rude and entitled in the main. Unpopular opinion maybe but I'm just saying it as I see it.

My friend met him a few times and came away with the same opinion. I like what I have seen of him on TV but that is the producers job.

I doubt that Harris caused the damage, this was years ago and as Ian said in the video 450bhp and a heavy car means the gearbox will suffer.

Did the wear on one part put play in the other or is it just a coincidence due to power, use and age?
Pretty clear the tooth pitting is as a direct result of the spline wear causing the gear wheel to run off centre and hence cause loacl high surface pressures on the tooth involute flanks as it is not even all the way around the circumference of the gear.

That gear / shaft spline wear was almost certainly a slow high cycle fatigue type wear, not a single overload type failure. Once the fit between the gearwheel and the shaft exceeds a certain value, the oil film can no longer hydraulically damp / cusion the interface, and the lash that appears acts to amplify and concentrate any Torsional vibration in that location.

The gearbox output shaft wear shows signs of classic fretting, with red rusty steel powder that has been released as the splines fret over a long period of time. A lack of lubrication, a poor fit, or even an incorrect case hardening of the part could be the cause.

Latest episode out.

Gearbox on the Countach...

Always enjoy Iain’s videos, especially when it’s one of Harry’s cars - looking forward to the next instalment.

Quiz question no.1 : just how many Espadas and Isleros can one workshop handle at the same time...? There are at least four or five Espadas in there at the moment!

A damp British B-road ....10 years ago... doing a sub 20mph drift outside of Bristol and you ladies are clutching your pearls as though he should pay for the gearbox in 2022.
What I find an odd thing to read is that this drifted from Chris chavving it in the Countach, to him being a rude and entitled person and you never liked him and this illustrates that hatred you have towards him as though this is all one thing.
I've met him too. Nice guy if you talk about other things with him. Its a weird thing to see how some people are around him in the car scene. His job is to push the limits of a car, dabofoppo for a cameraman and entertain you.
If you want a diary of life with a car, join an owners forum or social media group, ask a mechanic.
I also find that people feel ownership or a hierarchy because you are driving something expensive and therefore this must be treated a particular way as this is not how they would drive it.

I have never said CH should pay for anything, I was merely replying to a post that CH had sneaked in a drift while HM was away. If it wasn't meant to be underhanded then why wait til HM was nowhere near?

But its OK, I'm sure CH will tell you you're awesome for sticking up for him.

Please take the tit-for-tat about CH elsewhere....

Enjoyed the video, and it's surprising that those parts can be made for relatively little money in the grand scheme of classic supercar ownership. Are we getting a reveal of the cylinder head damage next time ?

I'm not sure there is any 'damage' as such; just valves not seating properly.

Loved the latest video, Iain and Harry always make for an enjoyable watch when they're together smile.

I too was surprised at the relatively low price of the gearbox bits.

So who’s going to have a guess at what Harry might be in for here engine out
Gearbox strip and investigation
Fix with OEM parts or fabricated parts
Full detail of engine bay engine and gearbox
Suspension refresh incl painting bushes etc
Digging deeper into the engine /heads off valve work
Something else / as you’ve gone this far you may as well - bound to be something
Rebuild
Tune
Crackle coat valve covers

I’m thinking (given we know it’s £3k alone for the fabricated gearbox bits) £15-18k.

I chuckled to myself (who else!) as I watched this and heard Harry sucking his teeth as though he knew Mrs M would be watching this and he'd emphasise just how much in the impending restoration would be necessary.

Of course, I'm sure that she's on board, but there's certainly an element of projection as I've found myself in Harry's shows many times justifying my own 'mission creep' to Mrs BolideM hehe

I reckon you're £10k light there. But when it's done, it'll be one of the best out there.

I don't imagine there are many cars that leave TCW with a sub £20k bill.

Looking forward to it all being done, and the magic hose coming out - end of June maybe?

I would imagine that is a given along with clutch slave and check the flywheel.
