I look forward to Harry's videos every Sunday and feel much the same way about this one. While it was a bit interesting to learn about a car I never heard of before, I'm not a Porschophile and so a lot of it was lost on me. It sounds like it is essentially a track car just tamed enough to make it street-legal, but with a lot of compromises for doing that, so it is essentially a competition car. The noise, the body construction and the lack of basic amenities mean that it would just barely be usable as a street car, and the value of it means that you would be risking an awful lot of money taking it into traffic. In the end, this didn't interest me, rare for a Harry's Garage video.
What basic amenities was it missing? As a mode of transport it has everything you need and nothing more.

I thought it was fantastic, both the car and the video.

Usual Harry's Garage level of (high) quality however, maybe I wasn't in the mood but the car/review just didn't do it for me so I bailed after 5 or so mins.

I still enjoyed the video, but I've seen enough old school 911 reviews to last me a lifetime now. It probably doesn't help that I don't have a great desire for one, even though I'm sure they're great.

Harry proper drives them though, no kid glove just because of the price/specialness - I love that.

I love the way he's able to do a video of a neighbour's old car and make it watchable.
Do you mean the 1 of 6 £1million 911?

If you want to define what is great about an analogue car then the 73 rs defines it. In fact, any early torsion bar 911 does a good job of that

Well it doesn’t have cupholders - which I understand is an essential for some people! Personally I didn’t think my car needed anything - except perhaps AC. Such cars are not generally used as daily drivers and the lack of a few toys is made up for by being so light and brilliant when you find good roads

£1m for that? Not a deviated stitch in sight. Pah.

Well, that was a guess but I bet I am not far off. These were big money before classics went silly….and this one is a very rare one that has been restored.

I may be £500k off but to Lord Bamford that is a fill up on his Super yacht. (I went to his house in Barbados….that is impressive and the boat was moored not far off)

Well, so would a Victorian dog-cart hitched to a horse, but...

Let's see: No glovebox, no ashtray (not that it matters much now but it might have in '73), no armrests, no rear seat, no interior door handles, no clock, no sound deadening, no bumpers, and probably not much in the way of corrosion resistance. It did appear to have a Porsche heater, for what that is worth. The racket it made drowned out most of Harry's driving commentary.

It is academic at this point since the value of these to those with the Porsche bug means few of us will have the ability to purchase one or even care. But that also limits my interest level to a great degree in videos like this.

I think you may have completely missed the point of the car, 200 lightweights were built with the idea of racing, in effect a pure homologation special, if you wanted comfort or amenities then you would purchase a touring spec car.

Agree with that. Sometimes a car is just for a specific purpose. Too expensive for me but I get it and I would have it for the odd track day and enjoy it of r what it is.

No, that was exactly my original point, and as a street-legal racing car, it would have very limited appeal to most. The person to whom I responded seemed to feel it was not lacking any road car amenities.

I got it.

There's a certain amount of masochism in some of our car choices, wouldn't want to do a 30k commute in my Cerbera for example.

I'd like Harry to review some more accessible cars, I know it's his perogative, but it was one of my favourite things about evo mag in the early days.

I think Harry would love a GT86, I'm biased though as I love mine.

I have to say that I unfortunately also glazed over on this one after about ten mins. I know all the worship, love and ridiculous prices these air cooled 911s command, but to me the DNA with the Beetle is too strong in these to make them in any way attractive. I think the footage from inside the cabin of it being driven just reinforced the idea of the agricultural air cooled Beetle aura these things seem to give out.

Hope plenty liked it though...

I've tried to like 911s but they leave me cold, almost bought an SC for 8.5k years ago, would have been a good choice financially I guess!

Don't like Beetles either.

Yep and that's the point. It isn't interesting because of the value, it's interesting just because it is.

The reality is it is just another old 911. Yes it's a bit special and not very common but it's still just an old 911.

Well as a contrast, as it's one of my absolute dream cars, I loved the video laugh

The car was made in 1973. Perhaps people should check out standard spec of other cars in 1973. Not a lot and hardly comparable with a modern car.

The Touring Spec is marginally better equipped but not that different. It is still from 1973 and still a full on sports car.

For those unimpressed it may be that they have never driven a well set up early 911. Clearly anyone comparing an RS to a Beetle has zero experience.

TBH, I have driven a 993, own a 996 Carerra and used to own an air cooled Beetle, so think I have some experience to back up my position on this. LOL!
