Fascinating episode. Seeing the killer holding the shiny fire extinguisher on CCTV smirking at the camera gave me chills.
Anyone have any thoughts on why he would do that? Genuine mental illness like his prepared statement or just literally a random attack and that he knew what he was doing?
I would say you would have to be ill to do it in the first place Anyone have any thoughts on why he would do that? Genuine mental illness like his prepared statement or just literally a random attack and that he knew what he was doing?

I'd have to say it's a genuine mental illness.
He starts his day by being taken to the hotel by Police to arrange a flight because he's being chased by Latvian Gangsters. The Police must have assumed at the time it wasn't a real threat or they might have taken him in to give a statement etc.
He spends the rest of the day skulking around the hotel, before his paranoia selects his attacker, 'this guy has been sent to kill you' - by now he seems to have leap from Latvian Gangsters to ISIS as his would-be attackers, the guy is acting strange (or perfectly normally when confronted by a paranoid schizophrenic in a hotel lobby) waits for an advantage and gets his retaliation in first.
Makes no attempt to escape, is begging for the police to save him / get him, all but tells the call handler the voices told me to do it.
It was only his typical "no comment" interview that made him look like a violent criminal and not a man with a mental illness, but that seems to be SOP for Solicitors these days, and why not? He clearly attacked the man, nothing he can say is going to change that - better to explain why in a prepared statement and not get tied into knots by the trained investigators.
The alternative theory of course is a man with no known criminal connections bludgeons a man he has no connection with to death in a public place surrounded by CCTV and Witnesses and then makes no effort to escape.

Not convinced until I saw him on the CCTV hiding behind a plant pot. Someone in their right mind planning an attack knows you can't hide behind a narrow plant.
I did wonder if he'd perhaps taken/been given something that set him off down that path. But I guess over time in a secure hospital they'll try and figure out if he's ever going to be safe to release.
Last night's viewing was very interesting, but also a very sad and scary outcome.
The attacker had already admitted to witnesses in the hotel reception that he'd attacked someone, even killed them, but even when shown the video said only, "No comment". No guilt. No remorse.
fk. Life is so easily lost: wrong place, wrong time.

Pretty chilling to watch.
We've all been there - kicking around in the hotel check-in queue thinking, "Hurry up, hope I get a decent room. will check in and come down for a cold pint and a bite to eat."
Meanwhile there's a paranoid schizophrenic waiting just over there to randomly bludgeon you to death with a fire extinguisher.
Talk about unlucky.

Weird isn't it. It was mental illness I suppose (as various reasons pointed out above) but then the No Comment is infuriating, even for innocuous questions. He did seem pretty normal in general.
I would then also like the programme to go further - how was he in the UK for a week? Doing what? Staying where? What do the family where he comes from think? Where did he get the money to come to UK / stay in hotels etc.

It says he was jailed indefinitely so he will be able to come out when he can show he is mentally OK - which could be a few years.
Not the kind of person I want on the streets TBH - could be a loose canon at any time.
They said it's highly likely that the sentence will be longer than a "normal" jail sentence (which is isn't really saying much)Not the kind of person I want on the streets TBH - could be a loose canon at any time.
It was very sad to watch the friend of the victim describing the way he received the phone call to say he had died, a father to a 7 year old child too....such a senseless act.
I had a thought that it was down to insanity when he was being led to the police car....'Is he dead ? Did I kill him ?' Like someone feeling justification/relief for their actions, in the same way as someone would feel having killed a hitman sent to get them.

He was clearly severely mentally ill.
Another massive waste of UK police/legal/confinement resources thanks to the lack of any real border controls, all paid for by the British taxpayer.
When you watch the no-nonsense thoroughness of the Australian customs on the minor channels, it makes me despair at the naivety/stupidity of the UK.

Just wow, such a waste of life for that poor guy beaten to death for no reason and the long term affects on his family.
Most of my thoughts and questions have already been posted by others.
Would like to hear the opinion of experts in the field of what, if any the attackers body language and facial movements, expressions give away in the interview stages? Are there reads there that experts in that field would pick up on and is it something that would be studied in greater detail at the secure hospital? he is now in?
Also, as mentioned above, technically speaking if the suspect appeared to quickly be deemed clear of any mental health issues does anybody know what the shortest time is he could be held?
Or is that the million dollar question?
