24 Hours in Police Custody: Ch4
Discussion
They all closed ranks, including the victim who wouldn't press charges.
The case collapsed when the victim claimed that he'd been in a fight outside the pub just before taking the hit in the back of the head from the defendant. (Mysteriously he CCTV footage for that one camera for just that one day had been recorded over)
On the basis that he could have received the fractured skull then, the case was dropped.
The Police must tear their hair out...
Edited to add that the guy was still found guilty but with ABH not GBH. The difference being Community Service versus Prison.

As an aside - Zero duty of care from the pub staff. Left him lying there for 40 minutes?!
and claimed not to know him despite being on the wedding photo's........I can sort of understand what the lad was saying, had the evidence not been so damming and the sucker punch so obvious I'd have felt sorry for the kid, pub brawls happen and the victim obviously had it coming, but that kind of sucker punch is so dangerous, could have easily been a manslaughter charge. Wise up muppets.

Ironic that the victim was the one who ended up in prison. (albeit for involvement in another fight)
Suppose they can't say it in the program but the 'victim' was also locked up for 6 months in Londonderry in 2008 for ABH (or as the news would have it "[he] kicked [the victim] so hard in the head that his contact lenses had come out of his eyes".berlintaxi said:
The attacker will end up inside eventually, the arrogance was oozing out of him and the verdict will have done nothing to reduce that, he had a lucky escape but one day he will not be so lucky.
I was thinking what was the point in wasting police time and resources when none of the 'community' wanted it investigating and it would 'sorted out internally' over time anyway. But yes, you're right, the fact he has this mentality in him means next time it could be just an innocent member of the public in the wrong place/wrong time. So you can see the need to try and get him off the streets.
A good episode though.

The 'community' is far larger than a group of lads that happen to frequent one local drinking hole. And anyway, how do you tell the difference between the community not wanting official involvement, and the community being intimidated into refusing to cooperate with the police.

Just the impression I get that when the accused talked about it being sorted out without police involvement if it was back in Ireland then he was telling the truth. It's the impression I get from the travelling community, they like to sort things out their own way.

But for 'Uncle John' and his timely intervention down at the station that would have been the wayRegardless of a lot of the other stuff I still find it weird that you can smash someone in the head line that and not go to jail. That would not happen in my world.
I knew the offender would be Irish as soon as I saw the fact that he did the assault and no one grassed him.

On another note have the shown forgotten it is called 24 Hours in Police Custody and the original premise was to roughly show us the pressures of that 24 hours - whereas now it seems to have become like every other cop show. It is entertaining but not really what it started out as.
When Malloy was charged he had clearly been bailed from the arrest as he was not wearing the same clothes - so the show was a bit misleading to imply he was banged us and charged straight away when it was not the case (given the premise of the program).
