Why would they need to do that, bearing in mind he was already in custody?
Done much police work have we?

Already covered

And a copper sat in cell with him, pathetic man. Weeping like a little girl.

Classified as at risk of suicide / self harm

His excuse should of been because he had such a strong moral compass he wanted to make a cheater suffer, so the 1k was secondary to the actual reason of making a cheat suffer.
The drug thing was stupid but anyway he got found out for being a hooker user and cheat also...Muppet.

At least the force saw to get his stay in jail longer although had the camera's not been around i wonder if that would of been the case....
No, of course not, in fact he'd probably been offered a caution, damn those pesky cameras

"It's tough investigation one of your own..." WHY??
because he knows the system very well! Knows it as well as the cops investigating him maybe and the investigators both want to ensure a conviction and also have to ensure that they aren't accused of going easy on him by the Warriors of the keyboard

He is a criminal and a prick, fk him.

Well he didn't know the system that well did he.

The amateur mistakes he made were laughable.

That wasn't a cell, it was the holding area prior to being booked into custody. It is mandatory ar every custody block that a prisoner isn't left alone before the risk assessments are done.

There was also the CCTV footage of him in a cell at one point, and he still had suicide watch.

I'm not sure what part you're referring to, but if someone is on constant watch the Officer stands outside the cell, not in it.

It was a bit weird really, a lot of it felt like the sort of thing people do as a stupid impulsive act on the spur of the moment (ie. doing something with massive consequences for no real reason and with no particular thought or plan to get away with it) but the whole thing had taken time, planning and effort so was anything but impulse.

Just odd.

There was a short sequence that was definitely a cell, with the bed shelf, open plan bog and those trade mark thick gloss magnolia walls.
The custody staff was sitting in the door way, not fully "in" the cell.

Maybe he thought that even if reported to the police it would stay in CID and they wouldn't have the resources to put something it place before the deadline. So they'd give some advice along the lines of 'if they make contact or any other threats get in touch, we'll investigate but don't pay.'

Surely it didn't enter his head that it would get bumped up to Major Crimes and they'd move so fast/set up surveillance on the drop site. Would he have had a better chance if a murder or some counter terrorism operation were taking up resources?

Not really. As mentioned earlier in the thread, he was probably banking on someone who uses the services of a prostitute and drives a Porsche being able to lose a grand without too much fuss.
Then next month he'd find a similar victim, and again, and again until he's cleared £20k.

If I was in the victims position (hypothetically of course...!) I'd be thinking if I paid a grand then there's still someone out there with images of me and chances are they'll come back again, maybe in a week, 2 weeks, 2 months etc. but they'll come back and this time it'll be for 2 grand or 5 grand or 10 grand etc.
Not an easy decision to make though.
