"Topical" Comedy on Radio 4

I like Radio4, but I don't rely on it for comedy or hammy soaps. Comedy (and every other form of entertainment) is everywhere these days. I suspect that we expect higher standards. There has always been poor comedy.
If there is good comedy on Radio4, it's a bonus.
I can do without hammy soaps, on TV or radio.
The Now Show should be ended.
The News Quiz is not as good as it was.
The new series of Dead Ringers may be good.
R4 used to be the cornerstone of comedy with an excellent, high-quality output. If there is good comedy on Radio4, it's a bonus.

You might not have heard any of it.

The League Of Gentlemen started on R4, and I think it may have been funnier then before it got onto the telly. You might not have heard any of it.
Alan Patridge started on Radio4

But it won't be.The trouble with DR is that it's supposed to be topical and satirical, but they're limited by the peple they can do impressions of.
Consequently, Tom fking Baker always seems to be making political comment, and everyone else sounds like John Culshaw.

In other, "non-topical" comedy news, Radio 4 Extra has started repeats of "Yes, Minister" on Thursdays at 12.30.
Arguably, it's remained wierdly topical every time it's repeated...Doofus said:

It never seems to date, does it? Better by far than most of the Beeb's current output, a diamond amongst the ordure.
It doesn't date because it's always topical, due to some glitch in the matrix, or something.MC Bodge said:

After giving up on several episodes through boredom, I now just delete episodes of Dead Ringers without bothering to listen to them when they get downloaded on the Friday Night Comedy Podcast. My main issue is I don't have a clue who most of the people they're impersonating are.I agree The Now Show and News Quiz have gone down hill though, Miles Jupp was good but I find Nish Kumar a bit annoying.

Nish Kumar is apocalyptically poor, terminally unfunny, and screeches and cackles at his own jokes, and now The News Quiz appears to be hosted by one Angela Barnes, who is apocalyptically poor, terminally unfunny, and screeches and cackles at her own jokes.I agree The Now Show and News Quiz have gone down hill though, Miles Jupp was good but I find Nish Kumar a bit annoying.
Bring back Miles Jupp. Now.

My main annoyance is they're not even his own jokes most of the time. Someone says something funny and he rephrases slightly as if he's picked up on something and made a joke from it himself, rather than just nicking their joke. Really annoys me.Luckily my long weekly commute ended about the same time Miles Jupp moved on, so I've not listened to that many since. They'd have been better off with one of the old regulars like Fred Mcauley, Susan Caumann or Hugo Rifkind in charge rather than trying for lots of new people.

I seem to recall him being quite good as a panellist too.Dermot O'Logical said:

The pair of them are as funny as knob cancer; bring back Jupp or do a HIGNFY and rotate whoever they can tempt with an appearance fee. Reg Hunter or Rich Hall for preference, but a rotation could/should give us a smattering of new blood.Bring back Miles Jupp. Now.
