Indeed.

Would be nice to see gb16 not make its money back. Hollywood might think again.

TBH I didn't think it was that bad, in common with many MM films it clonks a fair bit in the final qtr (just when it should be really cranked) but over-all it was not bad. Blondie got on my tits a bit but I did like the black girl. As for Thor's bro, he seemed to really enjoy camping it up.

Are there films I'd rather watch> Oh hell yes - but there are way more I'd rather never see again

Just got back, me and the wife are big longtime GB fans (my wife more so) but we both enjoyed this for what it was. Perfectly watchable, funny in parts and never outstayed it's welcome, in fact it zipped along very quickly with no real downtime.

Hemsworth was having a blast and I felt all 4 girls brought something to the table. Cameos really nicely handled too (stay right till the end, the credits are great).

Easy to get blasé about visual effects these days but my god they were good, the parade balloon ghosts looked incredible in particular. Really held up well in that respect (in fact, visually generally).

7/10 for me, 8/10 for the wife.

Saw it tonight, the only attempt at a laugh was due to the reaction of the guy who had his bike blown up when the new equipment was tested.

The rest of it was completely unremarkable, no storyline to speak of - it was more of a case of unrelated instance + unrelated instance + getting fired from university = job. There was pretty much zero progression unlike the original.

The characters didn't gel like the originals, it was like watching a manufactured band release their first video.

1/10 from me, and that was solely down to the reaction of the bike guy... What a terrible, terrible film.

Saw it tonight and it was nowhere near as bad as I expected. A good solid comedy. 8/10.

Saw this with my daughters yesterday.

I thought it was very enjoyable - strong characters, decent storyline, a couple of "jump in your seat" moments, some good/brief cameos and nods to the original, several laugh out loud moments.

Very good family film - 8/10 smile

ok I saw this tonight

and it was sub-par. some bits were very poor - I probably laughed twice - felt nostalgic at the cameo's but all in all could've been better.

the whole film seemed like a homage to the original. just when the film gets going - bang there you go have another cameo/throwback to the original. you begin to invest in the storyline of the new GB's and they throw you off again.

hemsworth - why? I mean ok its funny to see a stupid thor but they just ham it up so much. they could've had a joe in there and given more time to the villain which we'll come back to later. they don't even do anything with the fact wiig is infatuated with him and he just has no idea. that sub plot doesn't resolve at any point nor does it evolve into anything. its like OMG we got Thor to come into this movie - ok what can we do and they sorta make him opposite-Thor.

the villain - this was so poorly done. he had barely any screen time and no build up what so ever. apart from that scene when GB's confront him there's no back story or anything. what leads him to the occult why does he do all of this. so all kids who get bullied go to the dark side of the occult? its such a weak villain. they could've had this crazy guy who unleashes the dead and made a strong super natural villain but they dont.

they find those gadgets that the guy has been building to summon the undead - they find a working one and do nothing with it!! and their explanation of how he's managed to build it is because he read the book - like that's got a step by step guide on how to raise the dead.

the girls were ok - they were meh. to me though it was holtzmann's character that I found the most confusing - there she is this brilliant scientist and she's so off the loop. its like wtf your not even mad scientist your just bizarre. Jones was ok too- I think the fk up they made up with her was including that ghost slapping scene in the trailer and people kinda assumed she was the loud black woman stereotype. she builds better credibility imo as the film goes on.

they fked up on the ending imo. they did a lord of the rings and carried on from when the ending should've been. (yes I know lotr books carry on after the ring is destroyed.) they should've defeated the ghost - not done the emotional i'm not leaving you again dialogue, they should've just gone I got you! and boom your back. as soon as the ghost is defeated they stand up and people cheer your name - to show they're finally accepted. then in the mid credits scene you run the deny everything scene and end scene they finally end up at the fire station.

that whole sandwich bit was stupid at the end.

the script wasn't up to scratch. end of. the whole hey I got overall's and boom they come out with them - did they just get changed in the car??? how did the driver get changed?

nothing flowed as I said at the start. it was a little bland.

I've not seen it (unlike many here, I'm not a huge fan of the original), but that's an interesting article on the whole ethos of film making these days.

It's more of a platform or banner carrier for merchandising and licensing opportunities than an attempt to entertain an audience.

Maybe that's where cinema is going wrong these days?

Indeed, I think I phrased it in one of the threads as the 'genie out of the bottle', since the incredible success of the MCU, they all want a merchandising tie-in universe platform...silly twunts.

Didn't lose enough.

Anybody that paid to see this should be ashamed. You did a bad thing.

Science man is a good vid.

I posted about this on my fb feed, and I got jumped on by a damn fair number of people. I just pointed out a few, as I saw them, facts.

I don't care about changing genders, for me the issue with Ghostbusters was imaging a classic, a hollow reboot just for cash/franchise rights, the way they went about bullying the people who created/owned it. PLus after I saw it (didn't pay. biggrin) the way 80%+ was simply lifted, the RLM boys were right, it's almost the same, beat for beat up until near the end. And to compete with the combo of those three/four/five (director) would be monumental, and nigh on impossible.
Plus is was just a watered down, most basic of jokes version. There were a few good lifts, and I laughed maybe3 times at good bits, but it was hollow mostly. It felt more Scooby Doo than Ghostbusters.

Looking like it's on course to lose Sony a tonne of money, bearing in mind it would need to make over $400 million to cover the marketing and distribution costs. Perhaps next time it would be better not to politicise the whole thing and go out of your way to insult and belittle the existing fanbase?

Also, not making a hollow 2d facsimile of a classic will help.

rofl
even without inflation adjustment it doesn't top a 30 year old film.
