Shouldn't be the same record as a 2 wheel tandem bike though.
Most cycling records have separate entries for 'normal' and recumbent; primarily because the latter is so much more efficient.

Indeed.

I don't want to take anything away from what they achieved, but they didn't really break the same record. The record that stood was for a traditional tandem bicycle and, from what I understood (and I may have misunderstood) was across America on public roads (and, presumably, elevation changes)

Guy and his partner set their record in a streamlined enclosed recumbent trike on a circuit.

As I said, I don't want to take anything away from them by saying that so please don't read this post as being negative. I'm just saying that they set a new record rather than breaking the existing one. If that makes sense.

Clearly what they did was easier than on a 2 wheeled tandem.A lot easier.
I bet their record gets broken before the proper tandem one

Moan, moan, moan.

It was an hour of great TV, which is a very rare thing nowadays, with a great presenter spending 24 hours doing something I wouldn't want to do.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and don't care about the records.

Another good and interesting programme featuring Guy Martin, a man who can put in a good effort at quite a number of things and remain entertaining and likeable on TV.

Enjoyed that! Regardless of the record actually set that was a huge effort!

I believe the tandem record still stands, the actual record they beat was the multi manned Human Powered Vehicle (HPV).

The solo record for the 24hr HPV is 757.5 miles set in 2010 yikes

Still a great achievement and good hour of tv though.

And it appears there was no record to beat http://www.whpva.org/land.html#382 so should be relatively easy for it to be beaten.

However a group programme from guy and the team and was really good entertainment on a Sunday.

Interesting that most of the solo distance records were set in an off the shelf velomobile that you can buy for less than £5500. It amazes me that cycling is stuck in a technical cul de sac - the obsession with finessing upright road bikes is ultimate turd polishing.

I wonder how much of that is brought about by the cycling governing bodies?

You could say that about many sports though, motorbikes could be fully faired and the riders stretched out lower down to reduce drag, F1 could run enclosed wheels, ground effect and all sorts of other stuff that would massively improve lap times.

The UCI are directly responsible since they restricted bike design in the 30's to stop recumbents winning everything :-) Manufacturers aren't going to waste money designing things that they can't use in competition or look like the stuff the pros use.

I had a recumbent, they are brilliant but unless you spend alot of money they are heavy and suffer because of that on big climbs (not great for me since I live in Dorset) even so I would love to try a Velomobile (enclosed monocoque like Guys trike) for long distance rides they look ideal.

Great show and a hell of a thing to do for a amateur bike rider. Was the orginal 505 mile record set on public roads and not a closed track ? Although they beat it, I was split 50/50 with thinking the original record was amazingly impressive.

They didn't really beat it though, the end result was a new record in a different category.

An interesting enough programme but they set themselves a much easier challenge than the guys who did 505 miles on a proper tandem on proper roads rather than a custom-made recumbent trike on a dead-flat racing circuit. Guy shouldn't have claimed to be the world record 24hr tandem holder IMO.

I preferred his part in this to his participation in the Spitfire program.
