The fact that you remember it and even know who it's for, and have started a thread about it, shows that it's done its job.
A trite line that gets trotted out every time someone comments on an advert negatively. To take it to the extreme, say Ford ran an ad showing a horrific car crash of a Focus killing everyone inside (for some reason). You'd remember it, know what it's for and maybe even start a thread about it.
So would it therefore have 'done its job' as an advert in your opinion?
The actual 'job' of an advert is to sell. Just being memorable isn't enough.
This ad has generated this discussion, and the name Moneysupermarket has been mentioned countless times. Could be that someone, reading this thread, or overhearing 2 people discussing the ad, will log on to Moneysupermarket. Or you might, in 6 months time, when the ad is forgotten but the name sticks in your mind.
So it may be a trite line, but it's true. The example you make, re the horrific car crash, could result in actual negative feelings towards the product, and make the brand less popular and decrease sales, so I doubt that would work.
Tell me, what do you think the ad agency were trying to achieve when they made this ad? Do you think they actually thought people would sit around discussing it's subtle humour and artistic merit??? Or did they just want to initiate discussion, and increase brand awareness.
Do you recall the Silk Cut poster campaign years ago. It took months of posters before anyone knew what was actually being advertised. But it generated loads of discussion. And increased sales, in the long run.

I find the adverts very annoying, I think they should get some sort of animal and use that as a mascot. Say a Meerkat, and whenever someones buys insurance through them they should give them a soft toy version of the mascot! That'd work so much better, and everyone wants a Meerkat toy!!
They missed a trick. Monkey Supermarket fits better than Compare the Meerkat.durbster said:

That's a bit like saying we have a thread about cars and amalgamating every car thread into one.I agree this add applies to that thread, but this discussion is specific to this particular add
