Ok, not getting this released plot line for the film as it does not marry up with the trailer. It sates that the film will be set "before" Star Wars IV A New hope, if thetas the case why are the original cast in it in much older guise.

I think you are thinking of Episode 7 which is one of the main films set after Return of the Jedi. This is a totally seperate side story.

It sounds like you are mixing up Star Wars: Rogue One with Star Wars: The Force Awakens (aka Star Wars 7).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the 7th film of the main Star Wars series and takes place some years after Return of the Jedi. Some of the original cast are in this (Han Solo, Luke Skywalker etc). It is due to be released in December 2015.

Star Wars: Rogue One is the first standalone film set in the Star Wars Universe. It takes place in between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. It will not feature any of the characters from the previous films. It is due to be released in December 2016.

Disney plan to make Star Wars films continuously, alternating between a film from the main series (Star Wars 7, Star Wars 8, Star Wars 9) and a standalone film set in the Star Wars Universe (Rogue One, possible Boba Fett movie etc).

ETA: Star Wars Episode VIII will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad) and is due to be released on 26th May 2017. He has signed to write (but not necessarily direct) Star Wars Episode IX.

Of course, but when you consider that they paid $4 billion for the rights (some of which expire in 2020) they need to make a lot of money to get a return on their investment.

$4 billion?! I didn't know it was that much.

The next 5 years are going to be chock full of Star Wars merchandising if they need to recoup $4 billion and the cost of several movies.

I read somewhere over the weekend they've made a bloody fortune in increased stock price just from releasing the trailer and the positive reaction it's had. I'm sure it'll work out for them.

This standalone film could potentially blitz episode 7, I think the story of how the Rebels stole the Deathstar plans is more intersting than Han/Luke/Vader etc.

That and the fact that Darth Vader could make an appearance. In fact, if they are stand alone i am surprised they are not taking it further back to rise of the empire and Vader, this would have allowed for quite a few films with him in them.

They could well do - Disney have stated that they will release a Star Wars movie every year.

2015 - Episode VII
2016 - Rogue One
2017 - Episode VIII
2019 - ???
2020 - Episode IX

It would be great if they followed this with films of the X-Wing series of novels, some great stories in those.

And yes, I'm possibly more excited at the thought of Rogue One than The Force Awakens.

Time to resurrect this thread I think. I was disappointed there was no teaser of this in the trailer reel for VII.

Plus other images seem to imply the following plan:

2015 - Episode VII: The Force Awakens
2016 - Rogue One: Anthology
2017 - Episode VIII: As Yet Untitled
2018 - Fett/Solo: Anthology
2019 - Episode IX: As Yet Untitled
2020 - Kenobi (The Balance of the Force)

The one change may be if the Fett/Solo: Anthology are 2 separate films.

They're gonna recast Solo?

Also, are some of these gonna be cartoons?

All live action as far as I'm aware. Solo is going to be in his early 20s, so definitely re-cast! Miller and Lord are directing (and Kasdan writing) so should be good fun.

We already have rebels, which is Disney.

Rebels and Rogue one fit in the same part of the time line (between 3 and 4 which is what 20/30 years?), im wondering if they will reference each other. In a similar way that agents of shield references the marvel films.
