I've seen American Sniper-enjoyed it. I hope to convince the Mrs to watch Ex Machina.

Without seeing the latter they're probably very different. Sci Fi or war type biopic?

Don't really want to buy them both... I usually rent now instead of buying but I cant rent them yet on iTunes.

I'd go American Sniper. I watched Ex Machina the other day and whilst enjoyable enough it was quite short, fairly predictable and didn't really bring anything new to the genre IMHO.
