Films I watched this week

Stitches. Was on horror channel lastnight, watched it this morning.
Ross Noble is a clown (shades of Mr Jelly from Psychoville), gets killed at a kids birthday party that doesn't go well, and comes back from the dead to get back at them. Low budget slasher, OTT rubber model deaths, swearing, bad one liners, silly

You mean the Horror Channel showed something other than The War of the Worlds? I love HISHE. I reckon they wanted to milk the cow, and decided not to have the ending above, plus Scott seems obsessed (like JJ Abrams) on mysteries and when you stack mystery on top of mystery in a film which is just such an obvious set-up, it helped erode the structure of the film. What a waste.
I've just read a really interesting article on Den of Geek about the troubled gestation of Alien 3.
Well worth a read if you are interested in these films...

A couple I missed first time round but caught up on this weekend.
Saving Mr Banks. Didn't really know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Emma Thompson and Paul Giamatti both excellent, Tom Hanks being Tom Hanks as usual. Really enjoyed it. 8/10.
The Monuments Men. Very interesting story very poorly told. Overall, a mess of a film. Sorry, but George Clooney should stay in front of the camera. 4.5/10.

I presume with Bill Nighy who is always good value.
You're not wrong there. He's one of those actors who, whilst prolific and seemingly happy to be in anything, has rarely made a bad film. Has he ever made a film with Hugh Grant as his son? That's the inevitable, errr, ummmm, yes, well, casting, isn't it? Crikey!
M.
Transporter Refuelled.
No.
Things do not need rebooting after ten years! The original Statham trio of films have a certain amount of respect I think; everyone knew they were silly. The second one weak, 3rd a bit crap but the first one is just class.
Now we get a silly plot involving prostitutes turning on their boss by stitching him up with the other bosses. But they kidnap Franks's dad to make him help them. Er, isn't that why they pay him? Ray Stevenson was way cooler than his 'son' Ed Skrien who just doesn't look as menacing as he should and comes across as snarky.
Nangkang Hedgefinder out of Goodyear Eagle.

Paranoia was on the other night. I've read the book (which was very good, as I recall) and wasn't sure the film was anything to do with it, I hadn't realised they'd made films of any Joseph Finder books. It was the same story, reasonably good but not great. They seemed to have some difficulty remembering if the top-secret new project was called "Acura" or "Aurora", though. Reminded me a bit of "The Firm" in some parts, but while I'd probably re-watch that, I don't think I'll bother with Paranoia again.
'Breaking Away'
Small town boys wondering WTF to do with their lives post high school, whilst locking horns with the rich kids from the nearby university, and with a bit of a cycling theme. I'd never heard of it until I saw it in a charity shop, really enjoyed it.

Saw Captain America: Civil war the other night...and realised part way through that we hadn't seen Winter soldier. So watched Winter Soldier last night and a few bits of Civil War now many more sense. I wound;t class either as classics but they're both reasonably fun brain out action movies.

'Grosse Pointe Blank'. Must be a decade or so since I last saw it. It's still awesome!
One of my favorite films and always worth a rewatch. Fantastic soundtrack too.thismonkeyhere said:

Great film. They serialised it when I was a kid on a Saturday morning or something. Watched it again a few years ago and still loved it.
