The arrival

I'm quite surprised this has been so divisive. It was very well done, but a decidedly average story. Enough has already been said so.

5 out of 10 out of 5
.. .
I think you giving it 5 hints at why it's been divisive smile

I agree with your score having watched it last night. A decent enough idea but didn't feel finished and tried to cover too many themes. It's neither a truly thought provoking bit of sci-fi or a good cgi fest/let's just enjoy a decent cast fest.

Films like Gattaca at one end or Avatar at the other are far better resolved.

Free Fire

Hands down the most enjoyable film I've seen in the past 12 months!

50% gun play
40% crawling around in the dirt
10% witty barbs

If you liked the gun fights in Kingsman you'll like this, although it's a lot more gritty a film.
I've been looking forward to this since I saw the trailer a few months ago. Got rave review on the BBC this morning too.

Unfortunately it doesn't open till next Friday down here in Truro.
Yes! Saw it on Monday night at a preview showing at Wrexham Odeon (which is weirdly now not getting the regular showing, so I'm glad I saw it at the preview night) along with 15 minutes of G.I.T.S.

Great fun film, and Sam Riley from SS-GB is in it, totally different and doesn't sound like John Hurt at all! hehe
"It's too late; I've been insulted" is probably the best line of dialogue said in a South African accent since 'diplomatic immunity' hehe

It's a very funny film with a lot of gasps as well - I didn't see the John Denver-soundtracked kill coming!!
I was a bit disappointed with this.

It's a good film but I was hoping for more humour.

Vern was great! biggrin

Rogue 1

Now I haven't seen SW1, 2, 3.

But I did see 4, 5, 6 when I was a kid

And I recently watched 7 which I enjoyed

Anyway, goes along quite nicely. I'm aware of the SW universe, so it makes sense. Main characters are good, the robot is good. The baddies are bad wink James Earl Jones wasn't quite so menacing if I'm honest.

Can't believe anyone wont have seen it now, but

Interesting that they let just about everyone die, so no continuity to any further films. Was surprised when the first guy with the oxygen mask died so early on

Why did the Pilots brain not get ruined forever by the mind reading octopus thing at the beginning. Didn't oxygen mask bloke say it did?

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - a father and son coronary team try to discover the cause of death for a mysteriously well preserved body. Intelligent and creepy, with a genuinely unsettling performance from the titular character who quite literally doesn't move a muscle. Recommended.

I appreciate the spoiler tags, because I am waiting for it to come out on DVD/BD and it is still a few days yet.

I thought it wasn't completely terrible and I did properly laugh out loud a few times. Maybe I'm easily pleased but given the cast I didn't exactly activate my brain first so it made the film more fun. It was a nice 5/10 for me.

Ghost in the Shell - 2017

I have seen the original anime, but cannot remember it very well.

The imagery and visuals are superb. The story is slight. I think they missed an opportunity to expand on the original and make it deeper and more adult.

Scarlett looks great in her skin-tight nude cyborg outfit, although I suspect she's mostly CGI below the neck.

I thought it was OK.

Deepwater Horizon.

I work in the industry and watched much of the repair job footage live from the ROV streams online. In fact the part where the mud pit / shaker room explodes, killing everyone was a bit close to home I was a Mud Engineer with MI Swaco in 2004 my wife is now glad I no longer go offhore, the stories I could tell!!

The Rig was a bit clean for my liking ( not enough rust), the Internet works too well, but GoM is a lot different to the North sea.

the movie is a bit tech-heavy, it doesnt really explain what is going on or why the well testing made things worse. found myself explaining a lot of it to my missus.

John Malkovich is excellent as alway. effects were good. acting not too bad.

I have this on 4K BR and it is a visual treat. I do like this film. (Obs, otherwise I wouldn't have splashed out on the BR...)

Batman vs Superman - Daft, Wonder Woman was the best thing in it. DC stuff is a bit po-faced and lacks the charm and humour of marvel. 5/10

Fury - Because it was on telly. Brutal 'war is hell' movie with added Brad Pitt. Got slightly silly towards the end but overall excellent. 8/10

Love that film. Wish I'd seen it at the cinema but for some reason I had it confused with Inglorious bds and I'm not a huge fan of Tarantino so didn't bother. boxedin

Ghost in the Shell

I just saw it this morning. As I suspected, it turned out to be a generic sci-fi action film loosely based on Ghost in the Shell.

That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it, but it really only had a passing resemblance to the original, with the occasional bit of fan service thrown in to try to appease people like me who know the original manga and anime.

I've written in more detail on the Ghost in the Shell thread.

I assume halfway between Peter Pan and The Labyrinth right? Sounds like a good film to take young kids to see!
Guess again.

Very, very good film though.
Was a tongue in cheek comment, should have added a /s to the end...

I saw LIFE this weekend - a generous 2/10
I thought it might be a bit hit or miss from the trailer but I am a fan of sci-fi, but honestly what a pile of crap. The storyline was awful and consisted of so many plot-holes it was basically transparent. Some of the crap acting and inappropriate casting made me uncomfortable, but not as much a Sister D giving me daggers for taking her to see it.

A couple of people walked out of the cinema half way thru, I wanted to see the predictable ending. Which was predictable. I highly doubt the ticket sales will cover the budget.

I went knowing nothing about the comic, thought visually it was lovely (not just SJ) but the story was pretty thin, and some of it was a bit juvenile (for want of a better word), i chuckled when the baddie called in the "spider tank" for instance. I had assumed that was because it was taking bits from the comic to be authentic. Strange mix of tech as well, i.e. some ultra advanced stuff made driving a boxy Lotus and firing bullets seem a little odd.

A watchable but far from great 6.5/10

Watched it last week too, really enjoyed it but felt they really laid on the entire "BP at fault" dialogue a bit too much.
