Kermode on the latest ALien film, I'm with him on all points.
He talks a lot of sense. In fact, putting that together with everything else I have read, I'm definitely going to give this a miss.

The Illusionist
8/10

I enjoy Ed Norton's acting so went through IMDB looking at his films. Came across this.

Just watched John Wick. Suspend reality for a couple of hours and it's a hoot! 15/20.

You didn't find the plot rather convoluted and hard to follow then?

well just been to see DC's Wonder Woman and I'm not sure what I can say...

DC have finally smashed it! A cracking little film fun and plenty of soul and humour. WWI is an under utilised era in terms of film and this film nails that too. If Justice League is as good as this then Marvel will have something to worry about!

As an aside I watched this in IMAX 3D and I noticed some ghosting in the film - not sure if it was just me as I've not really noticed in other films

McLaren

Feature length documentary in much the same vein as "Senna".

Really enjoyed it. Some great historical footage Must admit to finding the theatre a little dusty at the end, but maybe that's just because he was a countryman. 9/10. Loses a point for the slightly intrusive music score.

inside is 10 days in the islamic state

on amazon very powerful film, very shocking, the people talking feel like victims of a cult, murdering people with no afterthought.

The review I read said it was formulaic, by the numbers, and ticking off each item on the PotC checklist. But I guess if that's what you are wanting then it literally ticks all the boxes.

War Machine on Netflix; knew nothing about it but I really enjoyed it. A bit like The Big Short but focused on the ~2010 Afgan war/insurgency. Actually reminded me a lot of the TV mini-series Generation Kill. A near-unrecognisable Brad Pitt in the lead role playing Glen McMahon (obviously styled after General McManus), other support characters obviously cast to represent the actual power-players of the time (i.e. a Hilary look-a-like playing the Sec of State, an Obama look-a-like playing the President - they only appear in 1 or 2 scenes but it was funny to watch).

ETA just read that Brad's character is based on Stanley McChrystal, not McManus.

Wonder Woman

At last DC have a movie that can stand comparison with Marvels efforts.
Obviously you need to forget the story is largely a rip off of captain America: the first avenger. There are some great moments, particularly the attack on the trenches and village.
The main villan fight was very much seen it before type stuff, so it loses a few marks there.

Love Mallrats, I actually prefer it to Clerks.

I didn't rate Chasing Amy though.

I know it's an old film but I've just managed to catch Manchester by the sea.
Hugely depressing film, but I didn't really get the point.

I really liked this film, can't say "enjoyed" due to the subject matter.
It's just a slice of life, differing types of grief, from different perspectives.
Not sure there is a point... it's just observation, a story and in amongst Marvel stuff, or happy, shiny, funny, lovey dovey stuff it's almost refreshing to have something of this quality that's dark and sorrowful...

How many times have we watched films that are dark, bleak, depressing, threatening.....but it all works out ok in the end everyone! ..ahhh, yey!
Life isn't always like that, especially when it comes to grief... it just goes on and on...

I watched Glengarry Glen Ross.

Supposedly one of those films to watch, but I didn't quite know what to make of it. On the face of it, its a bunch of angry salesmen shouting at each other for an hour and a half.

But I suppose its more about the plight of the working man and the things they'll do and how they'll treat people in order to get their hands on the green (for whatever reason).

I pulled it back last night though by watching Blade. Its great. Snipes is great.

Gonna watch Top Gun at some point, especially after I watched one of those YT videos explaining things about the film. Apparently (you'll like this).... they filmed a load of awesome military jet footage and then realized they didn't really have much of a story to go around it. Gets a thumbs up from me.
