Mr Holmes

A slightly less typical Holmes story with the elderly detective, with a bit more of a human aspect about it. A good watch, though just a little bit flat. 7/10.

Good movie....and great performance from an almost unrecognisable Steve Carell

did you notice his security guard had a gun, but didn't do anything.

Hidden Figures
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4846340/

Interesting story of how, even in esteemed/enlightened organisations like NASA, segregation and sexism was totally prevalent in 1950s/1960s - the whites couldn't help themsleves.

Three outstandingly capable women break down all sorts of barriers to gain recognition and respect to support and benefit NASA during the period where Russia were winning the PR battle with Sputnik and America lagged behind.

Nice supporting performances by Kevin Costner and Mahershala Ali (i.e. Benjamin Button's adopted father).

Well worth a watch - 6.7/10.

Amazon Primeday is reducing the cost of a lot of films. I watched Assassins Creed for £1.99 and thought it was really good

Spider-Man homecoming.

Great film and very different from a lot of the other marvel fare.

My only slight criticism was that Spidey seemed a bit underpowered. In civil war he kicked Bucky and Falcons butts at the same time. In this one he seems to struggle against better odds.

Still a very minor concern.

Tom Holland has the distinction of being the first screen Spider-Man that looks like a high school student too. Which is a good thing.

RDJs iron man is also reverting to a more likeable character too which is a pleasant change in direction.

Not the best marvel movie, not even the best Spider-Man one (that's Sam Rami's second attempt IMO) but a nice first solo outing for the webslinger in the MCU.

8.5/10

Yes Steve Carrell was amazing.
Also impressed with the serious lat work both Rufflao and the other fella had done to get that 'wrestler walk' look.

I did, made me think of the Jaime dilemma. He could have saved an innocent life. At least after the first shot.

Jaime reached for the flagon to refill his cup. "So many vows...they make you swear and swear. Defend the king. Obey the king. Keep his secrets. Do his bidding. Your life for his. But obey your father. Love your sister. Protect the innocent. Defend the weak. Respect the Gods. Obey the laws. It's too much. No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or the other.”

I watched it yesterday. Intelligent, atmospheric and with a great minimalist soundtrack. Features Hanley bus station too!

I thought the ending was a bit "Planet of the Apes". The film starts with the pupils imprisoned and ends with the teacher imprisoned.

I thought Kieran showed Prometheus levels of stupidity when he followed the child in the supermarket.

Not quite what I was expecting and fell slightly short of my expectations, but a solid 7/10.

Reading online somewhere it said he shot him once (I think a .44 Magnum was mentioned) so it was obviously played for drama.
Followed by a siege over several days.

Whilst he was played as a bit strange, it seems he had a full on mental issues (paranoid schizophrenic) he thought trees were moving about and Disney Characters were spying on him. This was hinted at via the horses scene and him shooting the ceiling. Apparently a riding accident had resulted in him having his nuts removed.

Pixels - well it wasn't the worst film I've seen. All in all quite entertaining (for once Sandler doesn't do his screamy melt-down schtick) some nice nods to the 80s (I'd forgotten how much I like Cheap Trick!). 4/10

Life - Entirely predictable, but watchable. 6/10

Wonder Woman - GG was fantastic. Some bits were good some not so. It was a bit too much like Captain America. 6/10

"get a job" 0.8/10

Classic American "comedy" thinking:

Weed smoking is hilarious.
Being a waster is hilarious.
Watching the hard worker fall apart is hilarious.
Main character ruins everything but everything is hunky dory by the end.

That's the whole film, no jokes or fun. I scoffed twice. Only added 0.8 for Anna kendrick and Alison brie.

Spiderman - Homecoming. Actually very enjoyable. Not really an origin story (thankfully!!) but also a glimpse of a teen on the cusp of adulthood

Went to the cinema today to watch Despicable Me 3, with the kids.

A mild hangover and 3d doesn't really go well.

The film itself was a bit weak. Not a patch on the first. The minions were a poor side show.

A bland 5/10.

The 3d trailer for cars 3 looked awesome though.
