War For The Planet Of The Apes.

Took the family to see this in 2D last night. Superb. Not so much a war film but a reconsideration of many a dystopian or war film over the last forty or fifty years ( and history from before that) and two main protagonists who were both right, one of which took us back a full circle to the 1968 original.

Breathtaking 10/10.
Agreed. Utterly brilliant.
I saw it last night, after re-watching the previous two films in recent days. I can’t think of a better trilogy made with that level of Hollywood blockbuster budget.
(The only thing they got wrong was calling the first one “Rise” and the second “Dawn” when it should have been the other way around.)
I hope they leave the franchise alone now, with these three files as a perfect prequel to the Charlton Heston original.

The Firm. Its about football hooligan firms and the fights, thought it was ok, still prefer I.D.

The Paperboy....curious film, kept me watching, mean story, good, but I won't watch it again.

Scott of the Antarctic...rousing old style adventure, stolid, and again, a bit of ending where one feels...damn.

Churchill

There are some historic icons who just need to be left and revered.
Churchill is oft cited as one of the greatest Britons who ever lived but all this film did was to make him look a bit pathetic.
Whether it is true or not, I didn't see the point of the film, at all. It may have showed he was as human as the next man but did we learn anything?
I think not.
it's a bit like making a film showing that Hitler liked kittens.
I also know that it is sometimes a choice between a better actor and having a doppelganger but I didn't find the portrayal of Churchill particularly convincing, either.

Not a patch on the original with Gary Oldman, proper 80stastic. Regarding ID, ID2 is currently showing on Sky Movies - the only reason it doesn't get a minus rating is because it doesn't contain one of Danny Dire, Leo Gregory or Tamar Hassan.

I just watched the trailer out of interest. Strange, I still don't know what the film is about!

It seems that modern trailers show you all the good bits of the films and as such you go away with the feeling that you don't really need to see them.

This definitely doesn't seem like that I would hope.

War for the planet of the apes.

I have to say I didn't like it. Judging by the reviews here and what others have told me I could be the only person that doesn't love it. I enjoyed the previous two instalments, but this one just didn't resonate with me at all. I would even go as far as to say I actually found it quite boring in places.
Someone in Hollywood needs to get a dictionary as well. Just as with Captain America: Civil War. Which should have been called Captain America: pub car park fight this should actually be called minor skirmish for the planet of the apes.
Finally kudos to the old biddy sitting across the aisle from me. Her stream of consciousness commentary did add a little bit of entertainment. "Look the monkey is wearing a hat" being a highlight.

6/10

Just watched the trailer, it's pretty st and doesn't give the vibe of the film at all. It's more Hollywood. The film is more a broody, slow burning southern thang.

Another MM film, Lincoln Lawyer, I have already seen this but had forgotten, it was damn good, man, MM is the best when he is on form.

Also forced myself to watch the last third of RIPD...ste.

Just watched COnviction.
fk, what a great story, swank and Rockwell deliver again.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conviction_(2010_fil...
Horrible story....it did put in my mind another film of police corruption. But I cannot recall the stars or name...or most of the story.
In it, somebody (PI...insurance...busy-body?) is hired/not hired to find out...erm, can't recall, I think the old death of a black person on the run in chains? In a swamp? There is a film set, and the star of the film set is under suspicion for a while, but at the end of the film it revolves around a bent cop, of sorts...any ideas?

I've just watched Planet of the Apes and have to say I really enjoyed it. There were a few logic fails and some telegraphed outcomes but overall good.8/10

Well, Baby Driver.

Great first 30%
Boring middle 55%
Reasonable last 15%

My advice is to watch the trailer a few times and then you have got it!

Edited to add, film 5/10

Music content 9/10

I still have the last track, Simon and Garfunkel, Baby Driver going through my head. I had forgotten that track ever existed!

Dunkirk - 8/10

Very very good, perhaps on 2nd viewing it will be even more than 8/10

Engrossing, tense and well acted. Hate to say it but even Harry Styles is pretty good.

The aerial scenes best I've seen in a long time.

Bit concerned as some of the details didn't look 'period' enough (too new ships, newer architecture etc)

Just right on the length

Not much blood and gore really which isn't necessarily a bad thing

It's not a Saving Private Ryan and a lot less on edge than that but this film nailed the so near to home yet so far away sense.

Well worth seeing

The film I ws thinking of was In the Electric Mist. Managed to find it by discovering there's a genre called Souther Gothic.

Looking at the names on the list, I like the style of Southern Gothic. biggrin

Had a 'back to the '80's' night last night...

Managed to track down and buy a DVD copy of 1986's The Wraith. A film I hadn't seen for three decades. It is still a fun (and very cheesy) watch, helped by a perfect picture transfer and sound.

Also watched the new BR edition of 1985's Fright Night, and that is still a great film, and much better with much more 'heart and soul' than the Colin Farrell 2011 remake.

It's a genre, I can see why No Country For Old Men is in it, the feel/style of that film is similar to the ones I've referenced.

True Detective S1 would be SG.

Just an observation probably judged by the fact that I thought Edward Scissorhands was a totally pointless film and I probably only got 10 minutes into it and switched off.

Maybe its just me?

I'e watched ES at the pics (I think) and maybe on telly once, I'd have to watch it again to pass comment. It deserves a watch as Vincent's last film.

ES is very good IMO; recent milk ad on TV gave it a little nod as well.
