Films I watched this week
Discussion
Cars/planes 1/2/3 even the kids don't want to see Cars 3. Captain Underpants on the other hand they're desperate to go and see.
I wish we had such easily entertaining films to watch as adults (John Wick does not count, 2 was really really rubbish). Spose Guardians, have to wait for bluray.

Surprised by that. It pretty closely follows the original animated film which I guess pretty much everyone with kids has seen by now so what was it that made you switch off and not see through to the end, I'd say it's not like you didn't know what you were letting yourself in for. Or perhaps it's just that your kids are that much older than when you saw the original and you've grown out of it?
Me and SWMBO watched it on Sunday afternoon and both thoroughly enjoyed it (although bizarrely I find the animated Belle more of a belle than the Hermione Belle).
The film improved towards the end but the miming of the songs was dire and the scene where everyone danced on the tables was way, way too West End musical and tedious, a poor attempt at Oliver. However, the entire premise, in real life, is unconvincing and, rather like Cinderella, it was a film that didn't need making. Unconvinced by Hermione's acting ability, seemed a sop to Harry Potter fans.Me and SWMBO watched it on Sunday afternoon and both thoroughly enjoyed it (although bizarrely I find the animated Belle more of a belle than the Hermione Belle).
Kid is away this week so been on a binge...
Spider-Man: Homecoming - 8/10
Pure joy, my favourite Marvel/superhero film, although I'm a sucker for US teen/high school movies so it was going to struggle to disappoint
Dunkirk - 10/10
Love it or hate it, it seems. I loved it, best cinema experience I've ever had. My colleague came up to me the next morning and said exactly the same.
Get Out - 9/10
A near flawless film with a wonderful mix of humour and dread. Really impressed how well executed it was.
The Circle (Netflix) - 3/10
Wow, what a stinker. So much going for it and such an interesting concept, but it's just bad. It also just ended, which on the one hand was a relief but on the other didn't actually seem to be at a point where it should end.
The Barkley Marathons (Netflix) - 9/10
My third viewing, wonderful documentary about a wonderfully quirky and brutal ultra marathon in the US.

The Mummy (2017) - very mediocre. Couldn't seem to decide if it wanted to be a horror like the original or a campy action film like the Brendan Fraser version. Tom Cruise felt totally miscast and unlikable and the whole thing was just full of plot holes why was an Egyptian buried in Iraq? Why if she would bring unimaginable evil onto the world if released was there a rope mechanism that set her free? Why was no one that concerned about him waking up in a mortuary?
As a slow psychological horror where the Mummy stalks our protagonist, something like It Follows or The Autopsy of Jane Doe, it would have been great. As it is, don't bother.

A classic horror would have been great. Universal are very silly, everybody wants a franchise, but they shouldn't be all the same genre.

Good video, but the chap reading from his autocue isn't very good at reading from an autocue. The content is good though. https://youtu.be/DKvouWcjrHg?list=PLSdZUSAfdmGbq2l...
Saw Dunkirk on IMAX last night. 11/10. It's a beautifully made film, with many fine performances and action sequences. The way Nolan has structured and edited the narrative is worth seeing alone. He nicely avoids using the now common ''blood and guts'' way of depicting war but still manages to put your heart in a vice. Can't recommend it enough.

I pretty much agree. On IMAX it really does make your fillings rattle too. Top notch acting as well. The interactions between Mark Rylances character and his on screen sons, sort of blink and you'd miss it stuff is spot on. From that point of view the attention to detail was brilliant. I can't really comment on the technical details as I am no military historian though. The non linear narrative really works with the time lines converging at the climax before drifting apart again. IMO this is the best use of this device I have seen (including pulp fiction)
I think this is a deeply patriotic movie and anyone with a drop of Britishness in them will love it. I will be interested to see how it's recieved overseas.
Instant classic (and I am no Chris Nolan fan) makes other war movies look old fashioned.
It can only be 10/10
I'm off to buy a model spitfire.

When I first came across this chap, I disliked his style very much, but the content was so good (basically, all his film logs; Die hRd, Alien, Terminator ones being exceptionally good), but now I've watched a lot of his content, I quite like it, he is quite subtle.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
