Baby Driver - 2/10

Couldn't believe how much hype this had received and how bad it actually was. In fairness though I bloody HATE musicals and cottoned on that it was pretty much a modern take on the genre. That aside, the acting is gash as is the plot.
Have to agree - not a film you'll go back to.

Like Inception - hype overtook reality.
Baby Driver is NOT a musical but a film with a very full soundtrack. That doesn't make it a musical ...The acting , Spacey etc, was spot on. Like many , I enjoyed it because I thought it was a cracking good film, not because of hype - which seems to be the usual lazy accusation made against anybody who holds a different view to your own.
The irony is outstanding!!! laugh

Aye it's a musical. Deal with it musical lover.

BD 2049 last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it but thought it was about 20 minutes too long.

Absolute epic scenery, backdrop and CGI which suited the film really well. The action scenes where appropriate without being excessive like they are in so many modern films.

If I have one gripe it is the fact that Ryan Gosling deadpanne face was a mirror of how it was in the film, "The Driver".

Watching it in the cinema is a must. You need the big screen and the brilliant sound that modern cinemas can produce to get the most out of this film.

Funny enough, some of the soundtrack reminded me of War of the Worlds which isn't a bad thing.

8/10 but probably not the sort of film that I would watch again.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Currently available for Amazon Prime members.

Very enjoyable 1960's romp with a really nice retro vibe. A little off the pace in places, but I really enjoyed it. And nicely set up for a sequel or TV series too.

Edit: Just to add, one thing that really annoyed me was the spoon-feeding of clues, a reveal, and then stopping to recap all the little clues to explain what happened. I thought it was rather an insult to my intelligence, although I get that it was the style of the TV series so kind of needed to be done. But even so, it was a bit annoying. The closing stage of the film with the missile attack on the fishing vessel was the most jarring one, as it was painfully obvious that they were going to launch a missile when the ship's captain took the launch keys from around his neck.

I'd very much like to go and see this but can't decide whether to see it in 3D or 2D.

I thought Ghost in the Shell in 3D felt like a cell animation in places with a 3D stack of 2D images (if that makes sense) and it was far more cohesive in 2D. Would the same be true of Blade Runner do you think?

I would agree with that, 2-D all day long for me and it looked great in that.

Personally, I really dislike seeing films in 3-D. If the film isn't good enough in 2-D then it is probably relying on 3-D to make something of it. I can do without that.

Just watched the "World's Fastest Indian" on BBC 2HD.

A solid 4/5 biopic with Anthony Hopkins as Burt Munro, a Kiwi who took an Indian Scout motorcycle to Bonneville flats to break the world 1000cc motorcycle speed record in the fifties.

It's in my top five, a very enjoyable family film.

Finally watched The Big Lebowski last night. 6/10.

Fairly funny at times, but I found Goodman's character annoying enough to be distracting; I found myself wanting to fast-forward to scenes he's not in. Overall, it didn't have the Coen charm I was expecting, and I'm not totally sure why it's so well regarded.

He still holds his 1967 World Record Class S-A 1000cc at Bonneville. In fact he is the only person to have gone quicker, albeit 36 years after he passed away when his son spotted a data error on his original 183.586mph average and it was actually 184.087mph which they fixed in 2014.

OK, bit terse of me. It's well done on it's own terms & Michael Sheen's turn is very good but... it evaporates into standard Hollywood peril at the climax with 100 foot high explanations from the ships tannoy - Maximum pressure reached, cracking glass indicating something very very bad and so on. Hero imperils himself only to triumph etc.

And that's after you set aside the whole premise is nonsense that in a starship doing half light speed, the computers keeping 5000 people alive can't work out that one & only guy being up & about is a bit odd.

This is in my top 5 films, watched it about 5 times since its release and enjoyed every minute.

OK, the dream/unconscious sequance is a bit dated but fitting all the same.

As for Goodman, the film wouldn't work without him.

All round, a joy to watch, 9/10 from me.

I suggest leave it a few months and watch again. Hopefully you'll get it.

Just to add to The Man from U.N.C.L.E, there's a bit in the film where they jump into some decidedly non-period off-roaders. I'm sure that the buggy that Napoleon Solo jumps into had modern one piece carbon-fibre race seats when he pulled the tarpaulin off it, but but by the time he was out driving it, it had more period padded seats with head rests.
