Films I watched this week

Bladerunner 2049
Utterly, utterly, utterly brilliant. I absolutely loved it.
Finally a sequel to a film from my youth that doesn't take a big steaming st on it by either doing a soft reboot or being a massive disappointment. Instead it was a very worthy sequel.
Fantastic cinematography and atmosphere. That panning short with the water gushing of the barrier wall was all very majestic but I was absolutely busting for a wee by then which didn't help. I finally legged it for the loo during the love scene as I didn't think I would miss much there.
Some people didn't like the pacing or length, but I thought it was fine (bladder notwithstanding).
An origami unicorn out of ten from me
Edit: Oh yes, I meant to add that the music was superb and the references to the Vangelis originals were very nicely done.

Atomic Blonde. Better than I expected, decent flick.
We watched this at the cinema, and quite enjoyed it. A lot more 'gritty' than I imagined, as I thought it would be like a female John Wick. With that in mind, I did have to stretch my suspension of disbelief to breaking point. This shows a few flaws perfectly (and quite funny..)

Felt a pinch of nostalgia before the weekend and ended up ordering a bunch of Christopher Guest mockumentaries which I hadn't seen in ages:
Waiting for Guffman
Best in Show
A Mighty Wind
Arrived yesterday and I watched them all; loved them. I see there is a more recent film of his I hadn't heard of - For Your Consideration - will need to check it out.

Vacation, (2015)
Brain out comedy in the vein of the original, (but not as good as from memory).
Tomatoes gave it a rubbish score and I suppose its not a classic but, and here's where they are wrong, I cried with laughter in several places! Of course it may have been helped by a classic dry Riesling but enjoyable all the same, (my wife and daughter didn't laugh so much but i put that down to the male/female divide)!

I bought the new transformers film off Amazon today. I should have known better, I thought it would be a bit of brain out fun, but we lasted 20 minutes before turning it off. In truth, you would need to be lobotomised to enjoy it. I am sure it wasn't made for a Western audience or, at least no-one over the age of 6.
It was standard fare for Transformers although I confess kids must be cleverer than me as they all look the same and I had difficulty following the plot.Blade Runner 2049
Went to see this last night, was meant to go with a mate but he bailed on me as he was ill so I had the pleasure of my own company. Glad I maid the trek out to Vue in Westfield as the screen and sound system was awesome. It's this type of film that really suits being turned up to 11 :-)
As far as the film goes, absolutely superb on many levels. Re-connects with the original very well with stunning visuals and cinematography. Thought I might be in danger of nodding off but it had my full attention for the entire film. Be careful though, it's very long and you might miss your last train
8/10

I've just finished the first series of The Wire, catching up with the hype train 15 years after it left the station.
I thought it was very good but not quite the sliced bread that others consider it to be. I'd go for 8/10. It wasn't so much that there was anything bad about, more that i just didn't see what others consider quite so special about it other than Omar, the guy who would wander round whistling. I thought what he brought was 10/10. For me, the only real detractor was it seemed a bit old fashioned in as much as the bad guys get killed, the good guys live. When the police women survived i just thought 'am i watching a gritty grime programme or the Fresh Prince of Bell Air?' Harsh, but you get the idea. I think if it had been made more recently, she, or some other policeman, probably would have been killed off .
But as i say, overall i thought it was really good and plan to keep watching. Is the general consensus that the series get better, worse or stay about the same as they go on?

Presumably working your way through a boxset left no time to watch any films this week? I thought it was very good but not quite the sliced bread that others consider it to be. I'd go for 8/10. Do you see anything beyond the immediate story in it? Because if not, then it's just another police drama. The beauty in it lies in what's not in the actual script from one episode to another.I thought it was very good but not quite the sliced bread that others consider it to be. I'd go for 8/10. As it would happen I was watching it via Google Play, which is quite expensive (Amazon Prime was the same), which in turn is the reason why i was asking whether it would be worth watching another series. I posted it in this thread as i know there are fans of the series who read it.Macca - Thanks for the encouragement
Eddie - I'm not sure i do, but i'll keep watching and hopefully figure it out...
