The Death Of Stalin

Bought tickets not really knowing what it was about apart from the obvious and having seen the trailer but it's a mostly factual account of the ensuing political to-ing and fro-ing after the death of Comrade Stalin as written by Armando Iannucci.

I thought it was great!

Django unchained was a bit of an ordeal to watch over two and a half hours so I did it over two nights. Plenty of blood and guts on show and some big names on screen but overall a bit ...meh!!.
Hard to believe how many times they had a white boy using the word Ni****er in it, considering the PC world we live in.

It was appropriate because it was a reflection of the time, hence no PC nonsense.

You cant tell a story of the hideous nature of slavery without showing that hideous nature in play.

The Right Stuff (1983)

Based on Tom Wolfe's book of the same name (which I read a couple of weeks ago); bio of NASA's Mercury 7 missions & the advent of spaceflight including some cool opening footage of Chuck Yeager smashing the sound barrier in his X1 and cut-scences to cackling Soviets launching ever larger rockets whilst the Yanks struggle to achive lift-off.

Huge movie with a great cast, quality flying sequences & period sets. Apparently flopped at the time but well worth a watch IMO.
Great film and very amusing at times, if you haven't seen it, its well worth the time.

It is only a word, does it really matter that much?

Everything is so PC now it really makes my blood boil.

It is only a word, anyone with any sense wouldn’t use it and those that do are generally ignorant.

That aside, I would love to hear the argument why it is okay that black guys always use it so much referring to themselves, especially in films? Mostly Americans I guess.

And relax.

Minions.

Put on purely to distract the son from Peppa Effing Pig, but what a film!

Laugh out loud funny most of the way through. Brilliant.

I've being trying out series on Now TV and for the most part they are all pretty poor.

DC Legends of Tomorrow. An interesting idea but shockingly poor delivery, extremely childish plots. 1/5
Supergirl, more like a soap than action adventure. 2/5
Marvel's Inhumans, boring and rubbish. 2/5

There Will be Blood
Daniel Day Lewis is a commanding presence on screen, as always, but the film was very disappointing. 5/10

Battle of the Sexes

Was expecting this to be a lot more funny but instead it was an earnest feminist biopic.

Not a bad one at that but the trailer was very misleading - Carell hams it up well and Stone does a good BJK - and I enjoyed the story as I knew little of it

7/10

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Wasn't sure what to expect but I enjoyed it; worth a watch if your into Sci-Fi style movies!
It’s very “Fifth Element” in style and story which is not surprising given it’s a Luc Besson film.

I liked it too but I wasn’t really engaged in the Valerian character... obviously Ms Cara D’s eyebrows stole the show. A character in their own right.

The ending was too predictable (and maybe a little flat as a result?) but it was a fun show nonetheless.

The film is called Sharknado 5; what were you expecting? Engrossing storytelling, nuanced direction, top notch acting?smile

Safe, the 2011 Statham movie. A slightly convoluted back story to our hero adds more confusion than real depth, but overall a plausible enough action film with some nice twists and good lines. 6/10.

Some want to own it, and that is understood, since it has been used as an attack for so long, then some go beyond that (in specific culture like gang) to make it inclusive. I know if I hear it in real life (not when I'm obsessively watching the Wire...of wich I am currently on S5E10) I would shrivel. And some of it is then probably wanting to sound cool fit in.
I was on a job this week and a young lad was chatting to same age group, and it wasn't gangsta talk, but it was a few steps below maybe, with only some words I know thanks to US telly shows like the wire, like 'bounce.' (which I admit, I actually like).
But then when he was chatting to me one on one later on about fasting, his speech changed and it was like a different person. It made me reflect a tad. Ot's allpart of the shove.
Al this 'too much PC gone mad' stuff, so long as you're not being mean on purpose, and are genuinely sorry if you do cause genuine offence,it should all be good.
Anyhoo

It was OK. I wanted to watch it properly, not over my laptop, so I did. Got a bit flabby in the middle, and I figited a bit, but it tightened up towards the end, and I found myself more involved and trying to guess where it would go. As it happened, I did. But it was more nuanced than I might have expected. Ultimately though, it left me a bit sad, as I expected it might, and it wasn't a great film, so I'm glad I watched it, but I won't watch it again.

I really wanna watch this.
I listened to Kermode's take on it, which I advocate.

Limitless. Decent idea, pretty good, a bit formulaic in parts, ending was a bit quick, as if they'd planned it to be longer but ran out of film / tape / money.

TBF Cara D's eyebrows are better at acting than she is, a shockingly poor thesp who somehow keeps getting roles frown

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Jimmie: [interupting] No, No, No, No, let me ask you a question. When you came pulling in here, did you notice a sign out in front of my house that said "Dead Storage"?
Jules: Jimmie, you know I ain't seen no...
Jimmie: [cutting him off again; getting angry] Did you notice a sign out in front of my house that said "Dead Storage"?
Jules: [pause] No. I didn't.
Jimmie: You know WHY you didn't see that sign?
Jules: Why?
Jimmie: 'Cause it ain't there, 'cause storing dead s ain't my fking business, that's why!

The TV series is an interesting extension to the film.
