Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Wasn't sure what to expect but I enjoyed it; worth a watch if your into Sci-Fi style movies!
It’s very “Fifth Element” in style and story which is not surprising given it’s a Luc Besson film.

I liked it too but I wasn’t really engaged in the Valerian character... obviously Ms Cara D’s eyebrows stole the show. A character in their own right.

The ending was too predictable (and maybe a little flat as a result?) but it was a fun show nonetheless.
I enjoyed it too but did find it fairly unoriginal and derivative - so many scenes that seemed to be filmed as tributes to assorted other sci-fi instead of doing something new and cohesive.

Agreed about not engaging with the Valerian character, bit of an empty shell with no depth/motivation/backstory and only minimal character development through the movie.

Watched Thor:Ragnarok this week too, I'm not typically into the comicbook-superhero type movies but it was a lot of fun and very enjoyable.

Limitless. Decent idea, pretty good, a bit formulaic in parts, ending was a bit quick, as if they'd planned it to be longer but ran out of film / tape / money.
The TV series is an interesting extension to the film.
Agree, I picked up the series on NowTV last night.

I like the way they are pitching the seminal character of the film as a black hat antagonist but I expect he will turn out grey hat in the long run.

Absolutely power corrupts absolutely, is a old theme, but does make for good stories.

I haven't seen a TV series, I guess it's satellite only. Sky1 according to Wiki. Maybe on Pick in a few years time, though it seems to have been cancelled now.

I'm watching it on demand from the NowTV streaming service on my playstation.

Suburbicon

Well that was disappointing, like a Coen brothers film (they wrote screenplay but Clooney directs) where the funny bits weren't funny and the action bits weren't thrilling. And the racial hatred angle was unpleasant without being informative.

To quote rotten tomatoes - Suburbicon attempts to juggle social satire, racial commentary, and murder mystery - and ends up making a mess of all three.

I continued to watch for the odd good moments (eg Oscar Isaac) and the style was spot on - but the pacing was way too slow.

I wish Coen brothers had directed it as well

5/10

I actually preferred the TV series.

To be fair, the Valerian and Laureline comics began in 1967 and were one of George Lucas's inspirations for Star Wars.

Indeed. Ghost in the Shell suffered from a similar issue, inasmuch as its source material initiated what is now seen as cliché.

After all, clichés have to begin with something

It is only a word, does it really matter that much?

Everything is so PC now it really makes my blood boil.

It is only a word, anyone with any sense wouldn’t use it and those that do are generally ignorant.

That aside, I would love to hear the argument why it is okay that black guys always use it so much referring to themselves, especially in films? Mostly Americans I guess.

And relax.
Doesn’t matter to me, I was just surprised ‘those’ kind of people hadn’t banned the movie and lynched the producer. You know how ‘they’ get. hehe

Logan Lucky

Average at best, really. I have quite liked Tatum and Craig in previous roles, but in this one they didn't seem to have a great deal of character development and it appeared a bit cliched. Had an Ocean's Eleven kind of vibe but couldn't hope to be as slick set in the red neck universe.

Tatum's character's sister is fabulous though, worth a watch just for those Daisy Dukes. Weirdly I was pleased it wasn't as much of a car film as I though it would be.

7/10
It was Adam Driver wot made it. Even though he was deadpan throughout, some of the scenes he's in are laugh out loud funny. When his false arm was sucked into the industrial vacuum they had smile

Did you just say "Cauliflower" ? "CAULIFLOWER" ?

Thor: Ragnarok. A fun, colourful, somewhat "Guardians of the Galaxy" style film. Probably too many Gods killing everything on the screen scenes, and Hela's bit of the plot was paper thin, but the rest was entertaining with some real laugh-out-loud lines. 7/10.

Got dragged to see Justice League and was truly awful. Nodded off towards the end.

Dragged by whom? Perfect opportunity to have some fun in the dark...

Mrs phazed and daughter are away working tonight, ( someone has to bring in the cash so I can spend it on cars).

Normally they seriously restrict my choice of film viewing but given a free range tonight, any recommendations for an intelligent thriller/realistic action film or something non romantic/comedy/sci-fi et cetera?

I just re-read the first line of this post and it sounds like they are on the game, which they are not!

Just to add, either on Netflix or Prime.

Watched 'Shot caller', and even though prison stuff isn't my cup of tea, was deeply moved by the context of the story. The score and pace were particularly great, the western-esque narrative was excellent, as was the acting. A superb story set in the not-so-superb setting. 8/10

I didn't even know it was based on a comic, learn something new every day!

Should clarify that I was meaning as much (or more) in terms of cinematography rather than story with that comment.

I've been having a Sci-Fi week

Edge of Tomorrow Pretty much as expected action flick, reasonably well done (I particularly enjoyed the scene in the middle, "Wake up Maggot", Bang. "Wake up Maggot", Bang... biggrin), enjoyable film let down by a nonsensical ending he went back 2 days but the General was just announcing the outcome of what they'd just done 2 days in the future confused 7/10

Pandorum Not what I was expecting, managed to get in a bit of the atmosphere of Alien and I hadn't spotted the twist until shortly before the reveal, not bad, 6/10.
