Serenity last night on Prime. A man rescues his sister from a government research facility where she has been used as something of a test subject, they flee with a bandit/trader ship and her crew; a ruthless government operative is in pursuit, keen to keep a lid on the dirty laundry. A bit like Equilibrium to The Matrix, this was a fairly low key release but in fact it's a better film than half of the Star Trek or Star Wars movies, and far better than rubbish like Jupiter Ascending. 8/10
If you don't know that Serenity was the film to put a cap on the series Firefly (which was inexplicably killed after only a single season), then you're in for a treat. It's the brainchild of Buffy creator Joss Whedon. At the time many felt that the "cowboys in space" idea was a terrible one, but the series is really more like Banter in Space and really has a heart. The late 90's/early millenium was a great time for TV SciFi, though loads of good stuff got canned.
When it was first shown, the TV channel in America put them out in the wrong order, so it looked like random people died at the beginning, then everyone was introduced half way through. It didn't make sense as a story in that order (no st Sherlock!), and it got cancelled.

(I realise that this statement is tantamount to geek heresy)
Yeah, Serendity is an exceptional film in it's genre. Stuff happens and it means something. I feel that some of Wheedon's later stuff has lost a bit of that. Though I migbt be confusing over MCU directors with his schizzle.
BSG was a great piece of sci-fi in the early 00s to forge onto success.

Oldie but a goodie.
The only thing that lets it down for me is Sharon Stone. Not because she's a crap actress, as she's not. But because her character is the most annoying woman character in film EVER! I'd have had her whacked!

The Social Network
The story of the creation of Facebook and subsequent legal wranglings over it being a stolen idea. Well made and moves along at a good pace, but hard to like anyone in the film - basically everyone is an ahole, mostly Zuckerberg.
Score - A Film Music Documentary
As the title describes really - and interesting interviews with the key modern players (Zimmer etc) and history of soundtracks in movies. Funnily enough theres a part about The Social Network (done by Trent Reznor). Worth a watch if you like OST's.

The Shape of Water
ermm.....Watcheable, well made but utterly confusing. No sure why award season has this one in their sights. I mean it's a good film but it's not massively award worthy...
A mute, cleaning woman, working at a Government cold war installation, gets involved with a creature that both the US and the Russians want to know more about. A bit like Free Willy in as much as the mute really wants to free the creature.....cos she's err...developed feelings for 'it'.....
But then there is blood and swearing and running about and stuff....so the whole Free Willy/ET aspect kinda gets shelved...
Just odd.
As far as a trip to the cinema goes, it's a lot better than Star Wars, but nowhere near as good as 3 Billboards....
Michael Shannon though. Reliable as ever. Scary bloke.
6.9/11.2

Broadchurch series two.
as said earlier on here, not as good as series one but by no means terrible. became a bit courtroom cliched and a bit too much melodrama for my liking - I prefer trying to understand the characters and motives as opposed to reveal after reveal after reveal as a crescendo tool.
will probably watch series three now this week too.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
Autistic doctor with 2 autistic kids and an autistic wife gets stalked by a super autistic young lad who puts a curse, or something, on the kids meaning they lose use of their legs and can't eat.
Autistic Dr has to kill one of his kids to save the other one. So he does.
Colin Farrell was very hairy. I'd give his beard 10/10.
The film though, ste. A solid 2/10.

Good Time.
This was only out in the cinema a couple of months ago yet it’s on Amazon Prime already.
It’s the story of two brothers and after one is arrested, the other spends a night trying to get him out, making a huge mess along the way and getting deeper into the New York underworld. It’s fast paced, set to a loud electronic score and let’s Robert Pattison show he’s not the kid from Twilight any more.
I really enjoyed it. 8/10.

I liked bits of this but in the end it came across as B-Grade Kubrick. Didn’t really like or care about any of the characters...except maybe the doomed son. 5/10 for me.Autistic doctor with 2 autistic kids and an autistic wife gets stalked by a super autistic young lad who puts a curse, or something, on the kids meaning they lose use of their legs and can't eat.
