Not a bad film at all but I mean, really? Lots obviously totally unsuitable for kids and really nothing like ET. Did a good job at pulling off a difficult idea but not award material...Three Billboards blows this away.
What do kids (or ET) have to do with it? It's a 15 rated movie which would probably have been an 18 twenty five years ago. It's a (very) adult love story and I thought a beautiful one at that. The reaction from Screen Unscreen was almost all gushingly positive.

This and Three Billboards easily the two best films I've seen in the cinema in the past few years but I can see why this might get the Best Director nod ahead of Three Billboards. Give the story to 100 directors and it's going go be an absolute cringeworthy car crash 99 times, but del Toro really really pushes it to the limit, never crosses the line and somehow makes a film with more heart than many straight love stories. All for $19m as well, ridiculously small budget for a film that looks that good.

Beyond- some new sci fi thingy. A bit lame altho based on a decent idea. Obviously low budget but not disastrous. 6/10

Sicario
Didn’t feel like it had a plot.
Some brutal moments in it , but won’t bother again
5/10
Pretty much my feelings too.
It definitely had a plot. Hard to miss it.

It had a few dead spots to me so I'd only give it 7/10. Will watch the sequel to see what they do with it.

IT (2017) - pretty good. They’ve broken it up into two parts. I expect the 2nd part (when they are adults) to be better. The first part reminded me a lot of the goonies but just replace treasure hunting with ghost hunting. I think I preferred the style of the original over the remake.

Sideways - Paul Giamatti enjoying his Californian wine whilst attempting to get over his ex wife and put up with his college buddy on a week long trip. Great movie. I rate it highly in the feel good factor stakes.

.
Critics loved LaLa Land too for reasons that escape me. Simone earlier in the thread likened it to ET but can't see that either.
I would not want my 15 year old seeing what she does in the bath.
Besides, I was brought up on Stingray...

The Red Turtle today, it's free on Prime. Entirely without dialog, an animated story of a man's life on a desert island. It's very good. 8/10.

Watched The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou for the first time in years last night; just as brilliant as I remember when it came out. Really can't go wrong with a Bill Murray-fronted Wes Anderson flick. I'd forgotten how good a cast is in it; Cate Blanchett, Angelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, Paul Giamatti, Jeff Goldblum and Seu Jorge doing wonderful covers of Bowie songs.

Amazing how many people never saw this gem. One of my favourite films with Bill Murray in.

Aladdin. I think with one of two exceptions, Disney films from the 90s don't really stand up.

Forbidden Kingdom

Jackie Chan and Bruce Li in a delightfully silly mashup of a standard hero's journey / quest, with elements of Bulletproof Monk, Karate Kid, House of Flying Daggers, and anything else you care to throw in. And Jet Li plays (amongst others) the Monkey King which those of us of a certain age will remember fondly from the TV show Monkey (which is itself is a retelling of a Chinese folktale)

Utter hokum and a very predictable plot, but I enjoyed it. Extra bonus for seeing a fight scene between Jackie Chan and Jet Li, even if it was a stylised one in tribute to martial arts cinema of old, rather than making even a nod to reality.

Edit: Interestingly, some of the fights reminded me of The Matrix. After a little research I found that both were choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping

Sicario, what a brilliant film, tense, well acted, crafted, executed. Wasn't sure what was going to happen. A nice modern drama.

Not sure if it's all Picturehouse Cinemas but our nearest (Little Theatre in Bath) has a Wes Anderson season starting soon AND a Studio Ghibli one. Not enough hours in the day.

Would love to see Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest Hotel in the cinema.

Land of Mine

A group of pitifully young German POWs are conscripted to clear mines on the Danish coast.

Brutal and moving in equal measure. Not to mention superbly acted.

Free on Prime 8.5/10
