Yep.
At least, I enjoyed season 1 which seemed to be a light hearted comedy before it turned all dark and depressing. Not sure I finished season 2 and haven't seen any of 3 which I gather will be it's last.
Enjoyed it all, shame season 3 didn’t feature all of the cast and was short. Suppose they just finished the story off on a more limited budget. At least, I enjoyed season 1 which seemed to be a light hearted comedy before it turned all dark and depressing. My problem is that I want to be entertained, and for me, so many shows require a significant investment of time, and the entertainment is slow to arrive. They may be 'slow burners', but I usually can't be arsed.
Maybe you should just stick to films? The Americans invest really well in drama. 12-24 episode series which, in the UK, would probably get 3 episodes. This means that proper time is given to individual character development, it allows for more characters, and the stories can take more twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing about how things will turn out.
That's not to say that occasionally you'll watch an episode and sigh heavily because they used it to tread water, but generally it works very well.

I tried Preacher, and the first episode had promise, but then it turned into Twin Peaks / Under The Dome. ie, the writers just kept going in the hope a story would emerge from the page.
Chose this as one example from your list; have just finished the second season. Season 1 was a great story: elements of fantasy mixed with small town life. Season 2 was very different and really ramped up the surreal nature of the tale. First couple of episodes into the second series, I very nearly sacked it off, but you have to stick with these things to see them develop. As I said at the outset though^, if you can't - for whatever reason - wait for things to develop, films are your friend (or re-runs of Doctor Foster )

Telly didn't used to be like this. Yes, it didn't used to have the budget or special effects that it does todsy, but consequently, it needed decent stories which had been finished before the programme began to be made.

I’ve been working through ‘parks and recreation’, it’s a bit like the office and modern family, light hearted comedy 20 minute episodes, some great characters.
My favourite ever show. Gets better and better.SpeckledJim said:

My favourite ever show. Gets better and better.Has anyone else started on Braindead? It's quite light and pretty silly (alien bugs eating people's brains in the White House) but it's well written and the intro songs are just superb. It's good to see Mary Winstead (the parolee girl in Fargo S3) in a leading role as well - she's rather good I have to say.

Gutted, just about to start the last episode of Black Sails, its been a cracking four seasons and will miss it when it gone.
Took me a while to realise that Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) is the baddy in James Bond Die Another Day, the one with the epic sword fight.
Yeah I liked black sails too, it’s not exactly high brow but I missed it when it was finished.Took me a while to realise that Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) is the baddy in James Bond Die Another Day, the one with the epic sword fight.

Watched it when it first came out. Interesting idea, well executed.Only one season but the story is self contained so not left hanging.
