I thought it was a great start to the series. I had doubts about the first house, the massive concrete bunker, but as the story unfolded it was pretty incredible how the architect had left courtyards where the original buildings had been. It was massive but in effect 2 houses.
Not sure why the 60s house with sloping roof was included, It was designed and built 50 years ago by David Levitt. The ladies did it up. Well done ladies.
The large green zinc agricultural house was the best of its type I've seen. The materials and craftsmanship looked first class and it really did seem to sit well in its surroundings. (a much overused phrase. )
The fortress on Jersey was just ace, like something out of a James Bond movie, it sat there on the beach going 'fk off' to the weather. Definitely my favourite.
The villa in Cornwall was pants. If you're going to design a cantilever, have the courage of your convictions and do it properly. Don't have second thoughts later on and prop it up with a couple of crappy poles. It was completely outshone by Creek Veen, built 50 years earlier.

Couldn't agree more. Moreover The Balancing Barn shows how it can be done. I can only surmise they ruined the ship for a ha'porth of tar. You would expect that on GD, but not this. Finally got to watch this. Mrs BFB was smitten by the pantsilever house. Am ashamed.
Whilst I get its significance I don't understand why the refurb made the list, perhaps delayed recognition from the profession?
First and last head and shoulders above the rest for me, especially the Jersey house, where you can see the context immediately as the camera pans out. The outside space looked slightly messily resolved though, something that the first did so beautifully by bringing it inside, as it were.
As said, some good stuff here.

Some very interesting features in the houses tonight, the Edinburgh house was particularly ingenious in its quirky uses of movable panels for light.
Wasn't it just.Love the Cumbria house externally - the stone and dark zinc (I assume) - not so sure about the inside.

I'm just catching up tonight, what was the orange cladding on the fortress? I must have missed it.Not sure why the 60s house with sloping roof was included, It was designed and built 50 years ago by David Levitt. The ladies did it up. Well done ladies.

A bedroom, with a bath in it? Never seen that before, what a bizarre idea.
Could definitely do with getting the motors replaced on his shutters though.
I didn't care much for the first house they featured, the one in London, and I didn't care much for the Japanese extension house either.
But the other three, I liked them. With the large house in Amersham, I now have a desire to have that inbuilt balcony they have in the master bedroom, and also the little triangular overhang with a window on the upper floor.

Not keen on the house in Edinburgh. This is what happens when you let a man who can't get a girlfriend build a house.
What a fking eyesore.
And the detail/ motorised shutters/window through the wall/bath to conceal a body.... just no !
I did like the Covert House despite the bedrooms being underground... it's just... it would have looked so much better if that raw concrete was plastered. They seemed genuinely excited that you could discern the very point where the second concrete lorry was late but just in time. I'm all for honest construction techniques but reveling in a change of concrete density in your wall is perhaps taking things a little toooo far.
The details were beautiful but plaster the damn walls, it'll look so much better.
I missed the second half. who got put through to the final ?
