Watched it again tonight. Just as impressed 2nd time around.

I wonder what software they use for the 3D animations.
Joe was using SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD design software, not sure what the Grand Designs production company were using.

Thanks, it's the GD one I was referring to.

They always impress me every week, no matter what the project.

I remember this one, didn't he leave his job because they sacked him because he was never at work... due to him building this house ? smile

I love this already. If they pull this off for almost next to nothing it’ll have been worth the wait.

I moved in to mine a year prior. I still haven’t unpacked or finished decorating/renovating. Where’s the rush?

Some people thrive on a constant project. I can’t ever imagine a time where there’s ‘nothing to do’. That seems so alien and almost boring to me.

(I’m currently repurposing a garden and collecting 5,000 bulbs for free/next to nothing)

Here's a theory. The nicest people make the best buildings.

That house is just beautiful and beats any of those modern glass boxes that we see so many of, hands down.

I think that it's possibly the most incredible build they have ever featured. Completely bespoke and in touch with the earth around them. Superb

At the end only half the roof was clad.

Amazing episode. I don't recall it from the first time it was featured so good to see it. Kind of weird thinking about 2007 being 10 years ago as well..

I think they really did show how fanatical this guys attention to detail was - cutting up a specifically shaped piece of wire mesh to act as a vent for the guest cottage, rather than just putting a normal vent in that would have cost a couple of quid maximum. It is almost alien concept to most of us I reckon, but it was spectacular how they did it in the end, for them, to live in.

Nothing like a house I would build, or live in, but absolutely some of the most positive and warm people you could hope to succeed.

It does indeed often seem to be those who aim for "the simple life" who get the best results though, I remember the guy back from the early days of GD who built a house in the woods for little to no money and recycled as much as he could,.

Now had time to catch up on the last two GDs .
The small house first , the young guy should be snapped up by an architecture practice ASAP , his concepts and design in getting the most out of the available space were brilliant .
It’s a pity the first “basement expert “ was such a fool .
Trying to dig without pilings was doomed to failure , he appeared to forget about London clay , you don’t have to dig too deep to come across it , and being impervious to water , the water table as well. And sure enough he found it .
And the FLT driver , well ! I think his incompetence has been addressed already .
Having said all that , the finished result was very clever and whilst limited in space , made the house into a Tardis ,appearing bigger inside than outside .
The last build , I am still replaying it in my mind . The guys fanatical attention to detail made it a long haul from breaking ground to …. Well if I followed the conversation with Kevin , a still un finished project , in fact I get the impression it will never be finished.
Simple things like the collars around the timber supports , the hinge to one of the girls bedroom door ,to name just two .
Impressive retro / modern . To my taste , humm Not sure

I usually skip to the 'revisited' bit at the end of the episode to see a matured and lived in house at the end.

This guy has years to finish the project and he still hadn't finished when Kevin turned up a second time.

I'm not sure what the guy was hoping to achieve, it didn't look particularly impressive for a house that was 10 years in the making and still in progress.

I'm not sure we were watching the same programme! Everything was made by hand to fit. That's some achievement considering the amount of wood and size of the place. I think he was just a perfectionist on a budget who thought the pursuit of building was part of the experience.

He'd been achieving every day for 10 years. That's the point.

Am I alone in thinking that is a magnificent achievement & a truly beautiful house?

Like many, I thought they were mad to begin with, listening to Kevin I kind of understand their reasoning now & best of luck to them, far nicer than where we love & he can take pride of ownership in virtually all of it.
