Floating mullion, opening inward
I've not heard the term, floating mullion before. Turns out I've just made and fitted a window with floating mullion which opens inwards so much appreciated. smile
You're welcome! Although given the choice I'd rather be able to make them than name them. Perfect if you have outside shutters

That's what I've learned. With shutters on the outside, the windows have to open inwards.

As it happens I don't have shutters.

What I do have is a wife who had a good idea after we went on holiday in France.

I'll start a thread. smile

Yes please smile

I went for metal casements for the openers in the end (all opening outwards) but have a couple of windows left to spec.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, but agree with what other posters are saying, it's a lot of effort for something they'd nearly outgrown by the time they moved in.

Also within minutes of the show starting, I was left thinking how can anybody involved in a self build (let alone an architect) be so woefully naive with regards to time scale and budgets! As soon as he mentioned 6 months I muttered under my breath 'I bet it's more like 16 months!', then they mention he's not working and they have to live, and do the build on the not exactly large budget, yup, classic Grand Designs!
Kevin had one of those exotic spesms, I don't doubt - gold dust.
It's the reactions and razor sharp comments of Kevin McCloud that makes Grand Designs but when he's being interviewed by someone who might not have a Scooby doo about architecture he's comes across as a arrogant condescending prick.

Take this interview with Aussie news as an example.

Nor did I.

Agree with earlier comments about the show being too light on tech and in-depth info on the builds these days. It's all about the 'human aspect' and not enough about the 'grand design' unfortunately.

They would halve their viewers figures though if they concentrated too much on the actual build and design process though... rather than the human side

I agree though...

Surely that's exactly why they had the viewers in the first place.
The show started off with kit homes and basic self builds, then graduated into architect led vanity projects and now seems to be more about the people building the house than the house and the cutting edge tech.

I would certainly like to see proper technical info but we are in a minority and times change - viewer expectations change.

Take Top Gear as an example. It used to be a factual program but the big viewing figures and international appeal came when it turned silly but entertaining to the masses.

If anyone wants factual build information, take a look on YouTube.

Would they? It's not like Top Gear where they randomly changed the format a bit after Hammond broke himself and got millions of extra viewers. They had a working format and it feels like they've changed it for the worse in recent times.

Information and technical analysis is accessed on the Internet these days. TV is pretty much ALL about entertainment. It’s all meant the dumbing down of many once great and factual programmes.

I hate the idea that information/technical detail and entertainment are mutually exclusive things.

I suspect many PH members would agree with this. I remember programs like Horizon, Tomorrows World, Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and even Blue Peter which were entertaining as it was fun to learn and hear about new technologies or existing known science which we may not have been aware of.

I'm grateful for those who put the time and effort into some YouTube efforts these days but there is dross there as well of course.

Let's not knock GD too much though - imagine if it was done in the style of some of the classic car restoration dross we've seen with fake stress and emotional toil. I think the problems we see in GD are real ones.

I remember getting a contractor in on a job who was trying to justify a rip off high price and he said that with his experience he knows how to price the job and inferred that I didn't - my response to him was - don't talk to me about experience - I've seen every single GD from the very first episode - the revisits as well! I don't think he realised I was taking the piss and he wasn't getting the job.

That is unfortunately the case. I do dispair for the future of the human race when it comes to stuff like this.
