Tonight's episode could be controversial, not sure i've ever seen such a dismally depressing new build..

An oppressive gulag.

Never seen a house before that needs a jet wash outside and inside. I hope they like green mold.

I like the concept of using concrete in that manner, but it looks dreadful.

I can already see that I may be in the minority on here, but I absolutely and totally fking love that. There is not enough brutalist architecture in this country for my liking.

I'm keeping my powder dry, but I too have a sneaking regard...

However, it's getting tedious to hear stories of how people are going to build x but they only have money for y, but still aim for x.
I think you're going to be disappointed then, as that is part of the self-builder mentality, i.e. to be aspirational.

...and as I said in an earlier post, (within reason) you can usually find a way to achieve the 'x' with the money for 'y', whether it's by sacrificing some less-important element of the build, or by mothballing part of the build for a later date until extra funds can be found/earned.

On our first self build, at the time we moved in, only one of the bathrooms was complete.

It's challenging me but I like it too, from the outside. The internal stain streaked walls, especially in the bedroom, you can keep. smile

Don't mind that, what I find irritating is:

a) making out the half arsed result is a preferred design feature - like the Ferris Bueller house - just admit you lost some of the essence of the design as you couldn't afford the glass but say we will switch to glass in a couple of years when funds permit
b) the lack of challenge/schadenfreude when identical Sheffield muppets say "we can build for one house for £145k and the other for £185k" (IIRC) when not a single builder offers to quote as their numbers don't make any sense, and they spend £610k

but that mightwell just be me being an arse hehe

Interesting. I'll be really keen to watch this, but if even Kevin McCloud thinks it's not homely enough then it must be fairly bleak!

It already looks like a leaky old concrete building. Why are there what appear to be water seepage streaks all down the bedroom walls?

I don't mind the exteriour of tonights build but fk me that interiour is grim. All it needs is Milla Jovovich being chased by the undead or Sigorney Weaver as Ripley to complete the post apocalyptic theme lol.

If it does leak with all lime being washed out of the concrete you'll end up with stalactites, pretty cool place to grow ferns too!

I like brutalist done properly, you can get some really interesting design in it.

As said before raw concrete takes skill to do, you can't easily fix the finish if you get the pour or the mix wrong or your shuttering wasn't cleaned properly. And it helps to use a mix that gives a good cosmetic finish.

Plus anyone with a clue doesn't go with those basic construction panels for the formwork, you go for something interesting with shape and texture. The classic was using sandblasted ply or boards to give the strong woodgrain finish but there are all sorts of things that can be done.

That one just looks like unfinished industrial because that's basically what it is.

Getting silly now. That looks like they just bought an old car park and moved their furniture into place. I'd be fking depressed having to come home to that every night.

I actually like the cosmetics of the bedroom walls/ceiling including the drips and circular imprints.

I would add lots of windows and light, bright modern prints and add colour in furniture / rugs, but provided it was heat efficient and therefore warm I would enjoy living there.
