Quite an entertaining episode!

As others said, why not get your family firm to do the glazing in the first place.. made no sense

The curves were nice, but caused a lot of problems.
Think I would have had curves on the bit you see most, go for boring straight lines around the back!
Indeed... I actually quite like the house. But, it should look good for the wild overspend. A million pounds over his initial, presumably low, estimate. The Latvians can't carry the can for all of that. But where do these people magic up so much extra money? I guess it is probably now worth multiples of the 1.7M, but still a big ask for their bankers. I hope he gets to enjoy it for a long time, the whole process seemed to have visibly aged him.

Ah ok, odd as I thought I'd seen all previous ones.
Last series was pretty poor then. Guess higher borrowing and increases build costs are putting people off doing 'Grand designs'
Not so much so in New Zealand though ... this one was pretty stunning though it did have its problems and being a shared-ownership house it's less interesting somehow:

Chesil Cliff House is back in the press... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13034527/...

Price slashed and he intends to borrow another £2m to finish it... isn't bankruptcy preferable at this stage?!

I'm surprised it hasn't accidently caught fire and burnt to the ground!

He's a hard guy to continue to feel sorry for, I confess.

By all rights the property should be named "Short's Folly" not "Chesil Cliff House"

He took a massive risk that didn't pay off so I actually wish him the best

He should just get it finished and rent as a holiday let to get some money in.

All I know is that I'd LOVE to sit in that top room with some whisky on during a very stormy night and watch the show.

Yeah, the house itself is pretty amazing but it's difficult to see how the guy could justify building it. If you were a billionaire, fine.

Or run it as a hotel, rent it out for events, weddings etc. Something to keep the money ticking through

Given how well known the building is, the story behind it, and how long it stood exposed to the elements in unforgiving weather on that coastline, i'd be surprised if he ever sells it. I certainly wouldn't by it, or only at a price you could write off the cost if the worst happens.

I doubt either of those options would bring in enough to service the interest payments on his loans. And they would make the property less saleable due to the issue of Sitting Tenants.

What he will be wanting is for an outright sale that will, at the minimum, pays off all his debts in one big hit.

edit: I agree with the sentiment that some income would be good. But the Sitting Tenants issue is a biggie.

Looking at the Rightmove listing, it looks like it’s being sold on behalf of the receivers ?

That is a great shame but not a huge surprise.

Hopefully it will now end up completed & lived in, albeit as a 2nd home in all probability.

I notice it doesn't mention Grand Designs at all. smile

Feels like the notoriety of its Grand Designs connection has become a bit of a millstone round its neck now. Or, given the proximity to the sea, an Albatross round its neck.

("Albatross! Albatross!")
