It got going well last night and overall I'm preferring this series to the previous one which I felt was a very generic storyline that had been told many times before.

The makers of "Discovery" need to watch The Expanse to learn how to write/direct and act strong diverse female characters. The two shows are chalk and cheese IMO

Bloody hell that was good.
That one episode was better than the whole of S4 in my opinion.

Yeah, I was hoping that last season was basically going to be what we are seeing now - the 'people trapped on a remote, barren planet with ancient Alien technology waking up' Sci-Fi trope just wasn't all that gripping, though it was well enough done and answered some questions. I was just craving more political intrigue and solar system conflict, which had been set up.

Also, IIRC they dropped that whole Season online at once ... doing three episodes to get people hooked on the Season arc and then releasing weekly (as they did with 'The Boys') is much better for keeping up interest.

Let's hope so.

I don't know why it was cancelled, I thought Bezos was a fan, and in this case unlike say Lost or BSG there's a clearly mapped plot from beginning to end, so it's not being made up as they go, and unlike GoT the show is not in front of the books so no problems there either. It has a clear start, middle, and end, plus annoyingly the last 3rd of the arc is perhaps the *best, so double grrrr.

  • I've read the books to 8 plus the novellas, the last arc ties it all together and gets very interesting.
I read them all too. I just found the stuff after the few decade pause to be much less compelling compared to the events within the solar system. All the wormholes, fascist dictators, exterminating aliens etc. are so common in sci-fi

S4 wasn't very interesting - may have had poor numbers which won't have helped its case, but S5 is excellent so far.

The main problem is a lack of marketing, and not being on netflix.

Well, you've got two choices really; splash for the lot or only go for 7, 8 & 9 (later in 21), as the TV series have pretty much nailed it to the books, plot & script wise - there's nothing missing, nothing added - probably the most accurate book-to-screen adaptation, outside of Shakespeare.

I had 1 to 6 before the series even started (I think - there is a hazy crossover in there somewhere in my memory) and there's nothing between them and Tv so far.

Season 5 episode 5 had to be a slower episode after the epic (in every sense) that was ep 4, but it did feel like a bit of a filler; please get on with the primary storyline!

I think it’s a consequence of having each pair of characters following separate threads - only so much time each one can get per episode.

I struggled with S4, the Alien stuff just wasn't that interesting. I loved the world and politics, war and betrayal and this is back to that.
It could easily be pushed as GoT in space.

Oh I disagree, the main plot arc is the same but there are a lot of lost nuances and detail that are not present in the TV series. I did a sort of half way house, watched the first three series then read the books and didn't regret starting the books at any point. I got the first one dirt cheap on Am**on and quickly romped through the lot. I'm looking forward to the last(?) book this year probably more than the TV series. Though it is a close thing!

Agree with your disagreement smile - what I meant was all the plot points are maintained to the letter, so there's no aspect of the story that one would be missing out on, even vast majority of the important speaking parts are maintained as written.

Oh, I felt what Amos did at the end was out of character.

Gonna go back and give this a go. I switched off because of the use of the word belter which caused my mrs and I to dissolve into fits of immature laughter every time it was uttered.
The use of the word "Belter" to describe people who live in the asteroid belts is an absolute staple of Sci-Fi, most generally associated with Larry Niven's "Known Space" universe but tacitly understood throughout Sci-Fi. It's one of those fundamental tropes.

I don't really understand why you and your missus find it so funny, but I guess I'm as ignorant of your use of the word as you are of the Sci-Fi use the of the word. The difference is, though, that this is a Sci-Fi show. smile

Belter as in 'cracker', 'smasher' etc. Typically a bird with a boat, rack and harris all above average.

What I do find interesting is the assumption that language defines class and standing within sci-fi. That in this case the Belters are given a more simplistic and pigeon dialect to carry the heavy inference of being an under class. It's interesting how sci-fi is often so reliant on quite sturgid cultural stereotypes.

Besides, the further away from Dagenham a human is the better the quality of their English so as far out as the 'belt' you'd expect then all to be speaking better English than the ginger Windsor bloke.
