I had read the first few books but being great in book form and the adaption also being great are another matter entirely.

Not finished the show but from around the middle of season 1 to the middle of season 3 (where they finish book 2) is amazing stuff. IMO the best Sci-Fi I have seen and one of the best TV shows overall.

They probably haven't got the biggest budget but the SFX look really good, great cast and great writing.

Yeah, it was a bit patchy at the start but soon found its feet. Also, it was very difficult to understand just what was going on during Season 1. There was a lot of stuff happening and a lot did not make sense at the time.

OK, so I'm now onto last series and whilst some of the last two have been very good, is it fair to say it becomes a little 'soap opera'ish? Don't shoot me. Still enjoying it but becoming a wee bit of a chore.

I was the opposite, I struggled with the first series then flew though the rest.

S6 felt like it didn't really do very much or need to be there other than to wrap the odd thing up, but maybe I wasn't concentrating.

I know it was cut off at the knees by Amazon but you'd think they'd make it more compelling to compensate.

S5 might be my fave, but for me the latter panto villain casts an ever longer Twkie-esque shadow as the whole arc ends.

That's the first time I've heard that view.
One of the things that impressed me most is the way it grows from a detective story in space to be so much more. The politics of colonialism, war and terrorism was there from the start, but I only realised that as the show 'expands' (see what I did there).
I'll admit I wasn't a fan of some of the 'life on mars' stuff. Maybe that's what you meant. But like everything else, it feeds into the wider story.

The fella Marco is such a poorly acted caricature he is spoiling it for me I must admit!

I think Marco suffers from villain fatigue. They need him to be in the episode but if all he's doingbis waiting for the next plot point to comr along he doesn't have much to do except stare at the wall like a villain.

I felt the same of Michelle Yeoh is Discovery. She goes from genocidal monster to comic relief in a single season.
