I can't help thinking that this type of behaviour by networks like SyFy will be self defeating in the long run - no-one will want to invest time watching a series which will get cancelled at some random point in its story, so fewer people watch new series and the network's viewing figures will fall.
Maybe we'll see a move to series which are deliberately written in such a way as to be concluded after a single season

That's absolutely rubbish news.
Though I can't say I'm that surprised. As much as it has been critically acclaimed, and is loved by the fans, I don't think the viewing numbers have been great - and given how much it must cost to make with the SFX, it was always a threat.
That doesn't make it any less disappointing though. Fingers crossed someone like Amazon Prime or Netflix pick it up. God knows there's little enough "proper" hard sci fi on TV these days.
I'm hoping that as it is shown in the UK under Netflix and marketed as a "Netflix Original", that they'll formally pick it up.That's absolutely rubbish news.

Sounds like it wasn't really made by or paid for by SyFy - they just had the first showing linear rights - so were just a customer.
Suggests a strong possibility of it carrying on.
You'd like to think so but I get the impression that they were providing the bulk of the funding. However, you could tell it wasn't a SyFy 'property' as the production values were so much better than your typical SyFy show.Suggests a strong possibility of it carrying on.
Amazon should take a good look at taking it on. Despite spending loadsamoney, their TV original TV content is very hit and miss, largely miss but with a few gems. This is a guaranteed quality SciFi drama and would boost their appeal.

Yep, not a huge surprise given it's the SyFy network, though still massively disappointing. Given Brooklyn 99 and Last Man on Earths demise, today is a bad day for TV
Brooklyn 99 has been picked up by another network, so there’s still hope for The Expanse, as above.anonymous said:

It's not clear that Amazon actually have bought it yet .... the original report's headline suggested they had but the article talked about discussions. AFAIK there has still been no official announcement to confirm. It's a great show, reminiscent of B5 but a lot less cheesy and of course, more 'modern'. Not 'Game of Thrones' level though, regardless of what many of its biggest fanboys say. Hopefully it'll be taken up by one of the streaming services as it really is the best hard sci-fi 'space' show out there at the moment.

I read elsewhere that he is a huge fan of the books... wonder if he likes Firefly? MartG said:
Yay!!It'll be interesting to see what the Amazon partnership brings ... they might chuck more money in, in search of a HBO level experience.
Was just watching Westworld last night and struck by just how much higher the production values were ... and The Expanse already had very good production values compared to most SyFy channel stuff. There's still a way to go before the 'Game of Thrones in Space tag actually applies.
