The Joe Rogan Experience Podcasts
Discussion
Yeah, I’m experiencing the same. I’m so used to the Apple podcasts app automatically downloading and deleting once listened to, that the Spotify app is a pain in the arse. It’s simple functionality of every podcast app since the dawn of time.
But it’s obvious why they’re doing it. It’s to get you to sign up to a premium sub. That gets you auto downloads and app notifications.
I also don’t want to have to download video. It’s minor given modern bandwidth, but I never watch the podcast I only listen. There should be an option of just getting the audio.

ah, I thought I was just being a ditz, wouldn't have thought they were that stupid they'd force everyone to download video, how crude is that? And yeh, all my podcasts except one on an app, I find myself inadvertently ignoring it now even though I have premium cos the mrs has it anyway.

I agree that the spotify app is rubbish. I use AntennaPod, so simple to use.But it’s obvious why they’re doing it. It’s to get you to sign up to a premium sub. That gets you auto downloads and app notifications.

But, there is an option to download audio only. But if I want to listen (I very rarely watch podcasts) while online the app then wants to stream the video also.

I haven’t listened to a single podcast since the move to Spotify.
I also unsubscribed from the YouTube channel just before too (unconnected) so have not idea of who has been on or what has happened.
I’d not thought about it once until this thread reappeared!
Me too, I have a premium spotify sub but just can't be bothered when I have many podcasts lined up in my usual app. I now don't listen out of principle which is probably stupid.I also unsubscribed from the YouTube channel just before too (unconnected) so have not idea of who has been on or what has happened.

I presume now he is paid buy spotify he no longer has 8 minutes of adverts at the start?

So has moving to Spotify impacted how anybody here listens to the Rogan podcast?
I find having it in another app to all my other podcasts means I'm less inclined to listen to it, and I've quite a few I could go back to listen to now -- they've backed up on me in recent months.
The fact that the Spotify app is pants for managing and navigating podcasts doesn't help either, of course. It never bothered me when sticking on a music playlist, or just firing on some background music, but it is absolute rubbish at managing podcasts compared to most other podcast apps.
I noticed a 12 minute clip from the Musk episode (1609) appearing in my regular podcast app in recent days. The accompanying text obviously suggested listening to the full podcast on Spotify if you wanted to hear more. That's the first time I'd noticed a clip being released openly to promote the podcast on Spotify. They've continued releasing clips on the YouTube JRE Clips channel to promote the podcast, but this was the first time I noticed an audio only podcast clip being released to promote the show.
Yup I didn't think it would stop me but I actually haven't watched a single episode, I even have a full Spotify subscription! I've always listened to the podcast whilst working so I'd have youtube on one monitor and my work on my other monitors. Spotify is just so I don't have to listen to awful music from the radio. I can't seem to kick that habit. I still watch the JRE clips posted on Youtube.I find having it in another app to all my other podcasts means I'm less inclined to listen to it, and I've quite a few I could go back to listen to now -- they've backed up on me in recent months.

So it's not just me then...
When I saw the 12 minute promo clip being released my gut reaction was that it was a type of "don't forget I'm still here - just over on Spotify !" Which led me to thinking how the move had impacted listener numbers.
It's possible to toggle a setting in the Spotify app to just download the audio, but when you open that episode beyond the minimised player controls at the bottom of the screen it will automatically play the video too (so long as your phone has an internet connection at the time).
That setting is on premium accounts anyhow, I don't know for certain about free accounts, but I'd guess it should be available.

It doesn't appear to be.It also bugs me that you have to manually select things for download, and that it won't download in the background. The app has to be active and the device unlocked otherwise downloads pause.
It's all centred around getting people to pay for a premium sub by making free content and functions poor. I completely understand why they're doing it, but it sucks.
I have a premium Spotify account and initially I was happy for JRE to on there. I usually listen to the interesting ones while on the way to work, spannering in the garage etc. However, they have recently started to put adverts in the middle of the podcast. They're hardcoded in so you can't skip them either, really stty move considering I pay a monthly fee for an add free service. It really shouldn't annoy me this much but I am considering cancelling my Spotify as a result
I was able to follow these instructions get an RSS feed for his podcasts to still keep listening to them on my PocketCasts app:

I've caught up with all the old ones, and still haven't listened on Spotify. The UI is awful for podcasts. I'd rather them just dump some spotify ads somewhere in the show and let us listen using old apps.
There are so many decent podcast apps built with lots of thought into the listener experience (I use podcast addict myself), and Spotify are way behind and/or hiding the more useful features behind a paywall. This is all to an extent where clearly people are abandoning the otherwise decent content.
At least it's given me a chance to catchup with other podcasts, as the typical JR 3 hour experience used to dominate my listening time.

Your not alone. I appreciate these are run as multi million dollar businesses but.... The big podcasts all have sponsor partners who are given podcast time. But now Spotify want it both ways and take a monthly fee from endusers and ad revenue. Premium users basically pay for the music free ads only. But tbh how else can they pay huge sign on fees to the likes of Joe Rogan and others?
Tbh I think both Spotify and YouTube are testing how far they can go with ads. Either pushing 'cost free' users to pay a premium or find the thresholds of core advertising.

this is downright grotesque for premium users and I think will bite them. People are paying for a free product purely to avoid being subjected to adverts you imbeciles.Spotify app is pure dog doo too. Podcast addict is where all my other pods are, phone is in a cradle close to the wheel that if a pod ends I can, without letting go of said wheel, with just a couple of glances and prods boot up any other another podcast of the 30+ channels subscribed. Spotify is a disaster of scrolling and attention demanding to do anything specific.
