I'm a massive fan of the novel and have high hopes for this. Netflix have been churning out some really great quality TV with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Orange is the new black etc. It'll be interesting how they deal with the violence in Altered Carbon as well as the visual effects.

I'm expecting great things. I hope they resist the temptation to make Kovacs a more sympathetic, TV friendly, hero type.
Likewise, I really do hope this is done sympathetically to the books. Kovacs is the quintessential antihero. There is so much scope to this dystopian universe, the hotel AI being my one of my favourite characters.garyhun said:
I saw E1 and I’ve not read the book. I’m interested but slightly confused
Bloke is trained as a super duper warrior with a certain trait to deal with interstellar travel (envoy training). No faster than light travel so your memories are in a "stack" or memory chip. They take that and beam them (needle cast) to another planet or conflict zone and dump the memories into donor bodies. These can be real persons sans memories or custom jobs for combat etc.Our hero went off the rails a bit (bloke and woman in the hotel at the start that gets raided). He is caught, his stack (memory or all that he is) is put on ice for ever for his crimes.
Now in the present (for the show) rich fella is murdered just before his auto backup. His old memories are 48 hours old and miss out on the backup so do not remember the murder. They are put into a clone he keeps handy for such circumstances.
Our hero is here to solve that murder but he was chosen for his particular skill and offered a get out of jail free card to get on with it, and a super duper body for his memories to be decanted into. The flash backs are to the older body but same mind.
Just had a mooch for a better description, about what I said.
wiki link to book, possible spoilers included
The main plot and goings on do not appear in this link but there is more to the background of the "envoy" etc.

One episode left to go. I’ve really, really enjoyed it. The Mrs on the other hand has struggled, finding it confusing and some of the dialogue too muffled to understand. I fear we won’t see a second season as it’s a bit too hardcore for casual viewers which probably make up the majority of viewers.
I think it's great. 3 episodes in and no problems figuring out what's going on. Although I do spend a lot of time explaining it to the OH. So I guess if you're not able to switch your bring to SiFi mode and absorb/accept the new rules of the universe right away, then it might be hard work.
E.g. the hotel is an AI. No it's not the same as the main character. More like a hologram representing a large computer, running a hotel and with many abilities. They are flashbacks to his previous body/sleeve...remember the first scenes?

I binge-watched this at the weekend and only have about 3 episodes to go now. I think it's really good and I haven't read the books. I can see why people might find it confusing though, especially when you have a number of characters switching "sleeves" and there are flashbacks, AI, VR and other mind bending things thrown in as well.

Wait till you've watched the last one before you read my spoiler about a second season...The season covers the first book out of the three Richard Morgan wrote. If they do more, they'll either need to go off in a completely different direction, or do the second book. Either way the actor is out of a job, as Takeshi is no longer in Riker's sleeve. To do it just as the first novel (albeit with some changes like the Envoys completely switching sides!) means that it does standalone as a mini-series if no more are made.
